Song

"Long Live Rock & Roll" is the title of a song recorded by American rock band Daughtry for their fourth studio album, Baptized (2014). It was written by Chris Daughtry and Sam Hollander, and co-written and produced by Martin Johnson. Originally released October 22, 2013 as a promotional single granted to customers who pre-ordered digital copies of the album, it was subsequently serviced to British radio as the second official single (and lead single in the UK) from Baptized.[1][2]

Composition

[edit]

"Long Live Rock & Roll" contains influences of rock music as well as folk and country, genres Daughtry is not typically associated with.[3][4][5] It incorporates foot-stomp and hand-clap rhythms as well as prominent banjo.[5] The song is a nostalgic, tongue-in-cheek look back at the history of rock music and name-checks various influential artists, songs and bands.

Due to its lyrical homage to rock and roll, the song garnered some criticism for drawing on folk influences instead of harder rock sounds.[3][6] Chris Daughtry defended the style in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine: "[It's] really ... about the song and not about how 'hardcore' it is or whatever... [I]t doesn't have to be this massive wall of buzzsaw guitars in your ears for it to be rock 'n' roll and for it to be us."[7]

Lyric video

[edit]

An official lyric video for "Long Live Rock & Roll" premiered on January 23, 2014.[8] With the radio success of previous single "Waiting for Superman", the US single release of "Long Live Rock & Roll" was scrapped, so no music video was produced.
