Dawda Jobarteh

Kora player, vocalist and percussionist from Gambia

Born 1976 in The Gambia, Dawda is the grandson of Alhaji Bai Konte, the son of Amadou Bansang Jobarteh and the nephew of both Malamini Jobarteh and Dembo Konte (who recorded 'Jaliya' for Sterns Music back in 1985). In the world of traditional Manding music, and in particular that of the West African kora, these are serious calling cards.

Dawda first played percussion which he learnt whilst accompanying his uncle Malamini, not moving onto kora until he had left Gambia and settled in Denmark. After many years working as a session musician and guesting on many CD releases Dawda now fronts his own 6 piece group with a début CD due out from Stern's Music in Autumn of 2011.
