The strategic manager performs a key role in the strategic planning process. They are the one that take responsibility for creating strategies and applying them. The manager is the one that leads the company to its goals. The success of a business depends on the effectiveness of the managers and how they develop their strategic roles. [1] [2] [3]

Types of managers

The relation of subordination between types of managers. 

There are two primary types of managers:

General Manager

Is the one that is responsible of directing and coordinating activities of the whole company or one or more departments . [4]

The most common responsibilities responsibilities of a general manager are:

  • Monitor daily operations of the company's departments or units that are under his or her charge.
  • Communicate with the different departments to check that the company is doing well.
  • Create and apply strategies in order to make the company grow.
  • Share the strategies and the results with the employees. [5] [6]

Is the one that is responsible for supervising a specific task or activity of a department of a company such as marketing, human resources, accounting,etc. [1]

The most common responsibilities (pls review grammar and spelling!!!) of a general manager are:

  • Help when team members are having problems with their performance.
  • Contribute with knowledge and expertise.
  • Command the activities within its department. [7]

Main levels of Management

Three levels of management

There are three main levels of management: corporate, business and functional. (some of your internal links direct to the Spanish wikipedia, this is not correct!)

Corporate level managers

Also known as Top-level managers. This level of management is formed by the chief executive officer (CEO),the board of directors, president and vice-president of the company, This level is at the top of the decision making. The CEO is the principal general manager and together with the senior executives, supervise the strategies and their development in the company. [1] [8]

Some of their responsibilities are:

  • Define the company´s goals.
  • Develop and apply strategic plans and policies of the company.
  • Distribute resources between businesses.
  • Offer leadership to the organization.
  • Be accountable to the shareholders and the public in general.[1] [8]

Business-Level Managers

Also known as Middle-level managers. This level is formed by the Departmental Heads (HOD), Branch Managers, and the Junior Executives. They are in charge of specific tasks and functions such as finances, marketing, production, purchasing,etc. [1] [9]

Some of their responsibilites are:

  • Give advice to the corporate level managers.
  • To implement policies and strategies made by the top-level managers.
  • To have more technical and managerial skills and less conceptual skills.
  • Be the intermediary between the top and lower management. [9]

Functional-Level Managers

Also known as Low-Level managers. This level is formed by supervisors, sub-department executives, clerk, janitors, etc. They are in charge of specific tasks and functions such as human resources, customer service, product development etc. [1] [10]

Some of their responsibilites are:

  • To implement and control the strategical and operational plans created by the business level managers.
  • Give the workers job training.
  • Give advice to the middle-level managers. [11]
