User:Skakkle/field (tactics)
In tactics, the field is a concept which is central to security. This applies to military operations, espionage, law enforcement operations[a], and other arenas.
If personnel are "in the field", this connotes being "operationally live" in some sense. This is as opposed to being in a base, a police station or any other reasonably private, controlled, protected facility where one's personnel and other resources are secure. When not on the field, planning, logistics, debrief, and other operational support aspects can be conducted safely.
Military[edit]
In conventional military parlance, the areas defined as "the field" vary by deployment.
- In conventional combat operations, usually anywhere off-base is considered to be "in the field".
- If forces are forward deployed, they are close to the current front line of a conflict or adversarial power (see u/ adversarial power), and this boundary may be somewhat fluid.
- If deployed in one's home country or an allied country– under peaceful conditions– off-base areas are not considered to be "in the field".

Notes[edit]
- ^ Within city or municipal police, the analogous concept is "the street"
