Shine Nelson (Malayalam : ഷൈന്‍ നെൽസണ്‍ ; /ʃaɪn ˈnɛlsən/; born July 25, 1992) is a FLOSS enthusiast from God's Own Country - Kerala, India. He loves technology, coding and contributing to open-source projects[1]. He is an active advocate of online democracy and privacy. He works to make the web a better place to live, to keep it free and neutral forever. He was a Mozillian[2] - a volunteer for Mozilla. He volunteered and worked in the bringing up the mozilla community in Kerala - Mozilla Kerala. He is also a member of the international, professional, non-profit organization IEEE. Besides his love for technology, he also is a big lover of music. Anything that soothes the mood is a favorite. His addictions include technology, music, programming, code, and many more. He blogs occasionally on his blog and on the Mozilla Kerala Blog

Early Life[edit]

Shine, though a Keralite by nativity, was born in Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain. He spent his early school life in the Middle East moving around the middle-eastern countries. He has lived in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Bahrain in the Middle East. Because of his family moving around, he has always loved Travelling. He has studied in 7 schools during his school-life apart from under-graduate college. He started schooling from The Asian School, Bahrain (1996-1998), moved to Gulf Model School, Dubai (1998-1999) and from there to Abu Dhabi Indian School (1999-2000) where he completed his second grade. He did his third to a partial term of fifth grade at Our Own English High School (2000-May 2002). After Our Own English High School, he returned to his native place, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India to continue his studies for a short period of time. During this period, he studied at Mount Bethany Public School, Kumbazha (June 2002-September 2005), a sister school of Mount Bethany EHSS, Mylapra. After completing his seventh grade and one term of eighth grade at Mount Bethany Public School, Kumbazha, he went back to the Middle East and this time to Bahrain and joined Indian School, Bahrain (Oct 2005-2008) to graduate from the tenth grade in June 2008. He came back to Kerala again to complete his higher secondary education from Marthoma Public School, Kakkanad, Kochi from where he graduated from the twelfth grade in 2010.

College Life[edit]

Though he had a love for machines and their working and an urge to take up Mechanical Engineering as his career choice, he finally decided to pursue Computer Science & Engineering - his childhood dream. He joined Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology in 2010 with high hopes of achieving his childhood dream of being someone great in the field of Computer Science. But as he started progressing in his studies, he realized that his choice to pursue engineering was a mistake and he was wasting precious time of his life; but he still continued the course, nevertheless. During the course, he heard of the international, professional, non-profit organization IEEE and joined the organization hoping to find some meaning with his time in college. He was very active and enthusiastic about the new concept of volunteering. He was always ready to take up any role given to him. From there, in his pre-final semester, he came in touch with yet another global, non-profit organization Mozilla. But Mozilla had an entirely different concept from IEEE. He was one of the people who initiated the regional community Mozilla Kerala[3]. He actively volunteered[4] for the Mozilla Community until late 2015 until his career demanded more of his time. It is from this community that he made a lot of techie friends and has turned his life around to be a Digital Privacy advocate.

Career[edit]

Shine started his professional career by joining a software startup called Ozerit Technologies Pvt. Ltd. started by an IEEE friend. During his brief tenure (Aug 2015 - Oct 2015) handling the role of Business Development Officer among others, he realized his love for terminals. With almost precise timing, a friend referred him to another startup Backwater Technologies Pvt. Ltd which spawned out the MobME mothership with an innovative product in the FinTech space. He was offered a role to work as DevOps Engineer which aligned well with his newly-found love for terminals.

Organizations[edit]

Shine has been involved in non-profit organizations. He believes that everything needs to be free, libre and open to everyone. He volunteers at Mozilla Kerala and IEEE. He currently curates the Mozilla Kerala Blog.
