Muneesh Sappel (Muneesh Sappal) is an Indian production designer, art director and costume designer. He contributed his work in Pinjar (film), Paheli, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi,[1] Bhoothnath, Sharpe's Peril and The Sick House. He has won several awards for Best Art Direction and Costume Designing.[2] including the Golden Globe Awards in the Best Foreign Film category for the year 2005. Paheli was India's official entry to the 2006 Oscars.[3] And also he honoured with Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for remarkable contribution in the field of theatre art direction in 2008.

Early life[edit]

Muneesh Sappel born & brought up in Lucknow. He received graduation degree from Lucknow College of Arts and Crafts, Lucknow University with specialization in photography. He is also a diploma holder in Dramatic arts from Bhartendu Academy of Dramatic Arts, Lucknow in Scenic design, Direction & Acting. He also received fellow-ship of Drama School and Repertory at Lucknow to work on Shakespearean theatre in 1990 with eminent director padmashree Raj Bisaria.[4]

Career[edit]

He started his career in 1982 with a renowned amateur theatre group Meghdhoot, Lucknow as an Actor & Designer and played important roles designed the sets, properties & costumes in various renowned plays.[5] He worked with Indian Theatre Personalities like Suryamohan Kulshrestra, Atamjeet Singh, Urmil Kumar Thapliyal, Badal Sarkar, Probir Guha, Shamanand Jalan, V.Ramamurthy, Gobardhan Panchal, B.Jayshree, Manohar Singh, B.V.Karanth, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Habib Tanvir etc and various Eminent International Theatre Personalities like Franz Havemann eminent German Theatre Designer, P.Edstrum Modern Western Theatre Architect, Ledea Konidrew & Boro Draskovic Greek & Russian Theatre Personalities[6] He adapted and directed plays like Aenemy, The Bear (Anton Chekhov), The Dice 9Frobes Bramble), First and Last (J.Gollswarthy), The knot (Athol FugardAwaz), Awaaz, Dhoka Ho Gaya, Ab Hum Kya Karain - original script for children Conducted children's theatre workshop in Lucknow, Kanpur and Varanasi 1990.[7]. Muneesh Sappel designed photo-features on various subjects for Lucknow Doordarshan which included scripting, shooting and editing. He Has also worked as Freelence Press Photographer for Hindustan Times, Northen Indian Patrika & Amrit Prabhat Newspapers in Lucknow.[8] He participated in group paintings & illustration exhibitions held in 1985-1987 at Lucknow, Kanpur, Bombay, New Delhi, Goa & Chandigarh. Also did his solo exhibition held on line drawings ( pen & ink) in the year 1988 in various cities. He organised solo photography exhibition in the year 1989 at Goa in festival of Uttar Pradesh. Also participated in group of photography exhibitions.[9] Muneesh Sappel's first film project was for Sudhir Mishra's debut film, Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin, as associate art director and actor in 1986 which won 34th National Film Awards for Best Debutants Director. In 1990 he came to Mumbai for Chandraprakash Dwivedi's mega-historical TV series Chanakya which tells a story of first moryan emperor and won several awards in all categories. Then he did a string of TV series like Abhay Charan biography drama - the life history of shree prabhupath-founder of ISKCON, Mrityunjay epic set in 1500 bc about life of karan etc. and started doing films such as Shaheed Udham Singh and Daman. His big break came with Pinjar and Paheli that earned him several awards and recognition.[10] He also got international exposure with Sharpe's Peril and The Sick House.[2] He did several AD-Films for various products like Pepsi with Shahrukh khan, Amitabh Bachchan & Rahul Dravid, Sunfeast Biscuits with Shahrukh Khan, Domino's Cheese Pizza with Paresh Rawal etc. and some Foreign Ads like COLORAMA colour film negative and Gulan Basmati Rice for England, Bahar Washing Powder for Muscut Oman etc. He worked as an Art Director & Costume Designer for more than 50 music videos for various companies. Worked for Siddharth Kak Films for M.P. Tourism Documentries and stories for series SURBHI, and also worked for Arun Khopkar's promotional film series for various govt. departments.[11]. He worked as a guest lecturer and designer with various institutes like Film And Television Institute Of India, Pune,[12] National School Of Drama, Delhi[13]. Bhartendu Academy Of Dramatic Arts, Lucknow[14]. Faculty Of Drama Mumbai University[15].

He has worked with eminent directors, Chandraprakash Dwivedi, Aditya Chopra, Rajkumar Santoshi, Amol Palekar, Sudhir Mishra, Kunal Kohli, Curtis Radclyffe and Tom Clegg (director).[16] He worked as an art director for theme park on Mughal Era (from Akbar to Shahjahan)for heritage pvt. ltd. (Delhi).[17] He designed & erected proscenium drama theatre auditorium for Yuva Shakti Modern School Rohini, New Delhi.[18] And also designed & erected a Mega Set for historical occasion of 50th years of Independence celebrations at Rajpath, Vijay Chawk, New Delhi.[19]
