4OD is an online video on demand service accessible though the main Channel 4 website.[1]It launched in November 2006, 4oD stands for "4 on Demand" The service offers a variety of programmes recently shown on Channel 4, E4 or More4, or from their archives.[2] Some programmes and movies are not currently available due to rights issues. The service was originally was both online and a separate desktop program for downloading your favorite show similar to iPlayer Desktop.

The cable and IPTV versions is operated through an appropriate set top box whilst the Internet variant can be accessed via Internet websites such as Channel 4 or SeeSaw.

As of April 2009, the Internet version is fully available to Windows, Mac and Linux users so long as Adobe Flash Player is installed.[3]

The "Catch-up" service offers content free of charge for both streaming and downloaded versions of a programme for thirty days after its broadcast on Channel 4. At this time, not all content is available to Irish users, due to licensing restrictions, however the majority of the programming is available.[4]

A Download to Own (DTO) or "Buy" feature was once available on selected content, allowing users to purchase a programme and keep it for as long as they wish. This service has now been suspended alongside the application to power it, in favour of further investment into their online cross platform catchup service powered by Adobe Flash 10.

The 4oD service is also partly available on YouTube, launching in the United Kingdom in late 2009 with seven genre dedicated channels for 4oD, additional to separate channels Channel 4 and E4.[5]

4OD Channel 4[edit]

4OD is the main source of on demand programs from Channel 4, More 4 and E4, The Catch up service currently lasts 30 days and the archive has thousands of hours of programing.[6]

4OD SeeSaw[edit]

4OD on SeeSaw had access to 4OD archive of shows such as the IT Crowd, Skins, The Inbetweeners, Bo' Selecta! and many more.[7] Currently (August 2011) SeeSaw seems to not have any 4OD content on its website.

4OD Blink Box[edit]

Blinkbox has acquired licences for a number of programs to be access on its website. Some TV Series are for free such as Shameless[8], Skins[9], Embarrassing Bodies[10] and Balls of Steel[11] and others for example The Big Bang Theory [12], Shameless US[13] and ER[14] have to be bought to be able to watch.

4OD Youtube[edit]

4OD Youtube consists of virtually all the same programs that 4OD website offers with a few exceptions such as shows from their archive.

Television Platforms[edit]

Virgin Media[edit]

4OD is available on Virgin Media's set top box.[15] This platform offers programs for 7 Days after broadcast and Virgin has exclusive use of most of Channel 4 archive which is free on XL package. Virgin Media is to offer a High Definition version of 4OD for some programs as reported in 2007 but now further information has been released.[16]

BT Vision[edit]

4OD is available on a BT Vision platform, this platform offers programs for 7 Days after broadcast and does not have access to the 4OD archive.[17]

TalkTalk TV[edit]

4OD is available on a TalkTalk TV platform that offers programs up to 7 Days after broadcast. This version of 4OD does not offer the back catalog of programs. Currently (2011) TalkTalk TV is currently no accepting any new customers, They are current developing YouView mentioned below.

YouView[edit]

4OD will be available on YouView which is a upcoming internet-connected television platform set for release in February 2012.[18]

4OD was released on 14 December 2010 on PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Network.[19] 4OD on PS3 is free and ad-funded with pre-, mid- and post- roll video ads being sold and served by Channel 4. This service is a 14 day catchup version of 4oD it is accessible through ps3.channel4.com
