From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Shakespear (1774 – 1858) was a 19th century English scholar of oriental studies employed at the British East India Company's military seminary at Addiscombe[1].

In his youth, Shakespear worked at the gardens at Langley Priory[2] where he met the Earl of Moira who determined to have Shakespear educated. From 1809 to 1829, Shakespear was appointed Visitor and Examiner at Addiscombe for his contributions to the study of the Hindustani language in the forms of his grammar[3]and dictionary[4].

After his retirement in 1829, Shakespear purchased Langley Priory[5], where he spent his remaining years. In his will he provided for £30 per year for someone to act as guardian of his house[6].
