Steve Allen Theater The Steve Allen Theater at the Center for Inquiry Los Angeles is a multidisciplinary resident fringe theater in Hollywood developed and helmed by Founding Artistic Director Amit Itelman.[1]

According to The LA Weekly cover story “Why Theater Matters”- “Itelman has booked interdisciplinary acts (music, comedy and theater) that strike a particularly brainy and idiosyncratic chord [2]... a kind of theater that bounces off the walls."[3]

The Center for Inquiry is a nonprofit group founded by Carl Sagan and Isaac Aasimov to promote science and secular humanism. When paranormal investigator James UNderdown Underdown became the Executive Director of the Center for Inquiry Los Angeles in 2003, he named the theater after Center for Inquiry supporter and television personality Steve Allen and offered Itelman an opportunity to define an artistic vision for the space.[4]

The theater is known for elaborately illustrated season programs.

New York times describes as the Steve Allen Theater as being “known for its willingness to embrace controversy… Unrelenting Grand Guinol Fashion” [5] Some high profile shows developed and premiered at the theater have gone on to tour overseas.

The Steve Allen Theater is an artistic inquiry into theology, science, horror, music and often uncategorical happenings and comedy, resulting in a polymath of stage disciplines.

As described by the LA Times “Theater of the Absurd. Itelman's artistic credo reflects CFI's mission of "not accepting things as they are” an unlikely lab for some of the freshest, strangest work in town…The bar for eccentricity may be pretty high in Hollywood, but the Steve Allen Theater clears it easily"[6]
