Help the Newbie!!

I need help trying to find out where this wiki-community community thing is, and what the basic order of operations are when one goes about the site. I know I should have lots of questions, but I barely know enough to ask about anything:

• • How common is it to write an article? How common is it to edit articles?
  • Where to members meet to vote and stuff?
  • Where and how do I take part in a discussion of an article or whatever?

I've been using Wikipedia all Summer for reference, and only now have I realized the extent of the community. I've been reading as much introductory information as I can for over three hours (it's 4 am), and I'm still very lost. If someone would just point me to the right direction I would be most appreciative.

I like science, languages, and random stuff like the Infinite Monkey Theorem. The main reason I'm here is for the articles, but these editing, translating, etc. things sound like a nice way to kill some free time.

I'll get around to prettyfying the page as soon as I get through deciphering this wiki-code. You might see me in the sandbox writing down anatomy notes and practicing layout techniques. (I'm familure with HTML, but my knowledge to CSS is limited to cut/paste)
