Lina Marcela Gallego Páez is a Colombian biologist, recipient of a L'Oreal UNESCO for Women in Science award in 2013 for her research on cancer diagnosis according to the type of cancer and the genetic profile of each patient.[1][2]

Education[edit]

Gallego obtained a BSc from the Universidad del Valle (Colombia) in 2005. Two years later Gallego moved to Japan to carry out an MSc in Biological Sciences at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, where she went on to pursue doctorate studies in Biological Sciences[3]. Her PhD thesis was titled "Functional analysis of Smc5/6 Complex in Human Cells"[4]. In 2014 Gallego attended the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain, to get a degree in Science, Medical and Environmental Communication.[3]

Career[edit]

Gallego went on to hold postdoctoral positions in Portugal, at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in Oeiras, and the Instituto de Medicina Molecular of the University of Lisbon. She has worked as a teacher in the School and Art Center Juvenilia and the Free University of Colombia. Gallego has participated in international research projects at the University of Tokyo and the Japanese Foundation For Cancer Research, focusing on "defining specific strategies that can differentiate treatments for each person suffering from cancer and how in a more personalized way, we can be more effective" [translated from Spanish][2]. Her research is aimed at generating optimal treatments for each individual patient [2][3]. In recognition of her research, Gallego received a L'Oreal UNESCO for Women in Science award in 2013[1]. She has also received the National Prize for Genetics and Biotechnology, awarded by the Colombian Association of Biological Sciences during the "Festival of Heroes" event in Bogotá (Colombia).[2][5]
