IJsbrand van Veelen is a Dutch documentary maker, art critic, and entrepreneur.

Director of documentaries[edit]

From 1991-2013 worked as a director of documentaries about society, culture, history, politics and science for VPRO/Dutch national television. Several of his documentaries won awards at international filmfestivals.

Art critic[edit]

Has an MA in Art-history and Archeology from the University of Amsterdam. Has been an art critic, essayist and author since 1986. Wrote for Het Parool, a Dutch national newspaper, and for international art magazines such as Flash Art and Lápiz. Has written numerous articles, essays, columns and catalogues about art and culture. Curated several exhibitions. Writes columns and essays on culture since 2002 for Kunstbeeld, Holland’s leading arts monthly.

Entrepreneur[edit]

May 2014 Van Veelen and Jeroen Roodnat founded The Thinkfactory (De Denkfabriek) a Dutch agency that specializes in mediaconcepts for projects with social relevance. Partners include KPN, Emma Children's Hospital AMC, and the Municipality of the city of Eindhoven. At The Thinkfactory Van Veelen's role is that of director and creative.
