Globe Sports is a sports news program presented by TV Globo since August 14, 1978, aired in the afternoons from Monday to Saturday. It is presented by a local host from their region. It also has the online portal ge, where journalistic materials are published daily, covering various sports and modalities, with a special focus on football.

History[edit]

It debuted on August 14, 1978, replacing Copa Brasil and thus expanding the space to cover news from all sports modalities, while still focusing on football. The host of the debut was Léo Batista. Since then, respected and well-known names in sports journalism, such as Léo, have hosted the program, including Fernando Vanucci, Galvão Bueno, Cleber Machado, Isabela Scalabrini, Fernando Sasso, Natan Oliveira, Paulo Brito, Sérgio Ewerthon, Oliveira Andrade, Debora Meneses, Mylena Ciribelli, Tino Marcos, Glenda Kozlowski, Alexandre Bacci, among others.

Currently, there are 19 editions of the program: one network edition recorded and generated by Globo in Rio de Janeiro for all of Brazil (except for DF, SP, AM, AC, RO, MG, MT, MS, RS, PA, PE, BA, PR, CE, GO, SC, SE, MA). In this edition, the first block of the program schedule is reserved for local station programming. From 2008 to 2010, the national edition of the program was presented by Glenda Kozlowski. Since then, it has been presented by Cristiane Dias.

Since the end of 2010, Globo had occasionally been showing an edition only for the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. Starting on January 3, 2011, Rio de Janeiro residents gained this exclusive edition where it showed the first high-definition (HD) content in its history. The states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais also have their own editions, shown only in those states by their respective affiliates. This scheme was used again in 2009, after the year 2008 when the news was presented nationwide, in the weeks leading up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, a part of Globe Sports from Rio de Janeiro began to be shown for São Paulo and Minas Gerais, with only the first local block remaining.

Since May 16, Globe Sports has had more regional editions for the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Pernambuco, Paraná, Ceará, and Bahia. For the regions where the network edition was shown, the GE Agency was created to centralize material from network reporters, edited to match the standards of the editions from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, via satellite, varying according to the state's needs. In addition, these editions are presented by pairs. First with Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Ceará, then Pernambuco and Paraná. .[1]

The national edition is recorded in the same studio as the local edition for the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, which is broadcast live. On Saturdays, the national edition is also broadcast to Rio de Janeiro. The Globe Sports RJ edition is rebroadcast throughout the state. Some regions do not even have their own local segment and watch the full national edition.

During the year-end break at TV Globo, which is the week of Christmas and New Year's, a single program is broadcasted for the entire country. One week features the network's São Paulo edition, while the other week features the network's Rio de Janeiro edition.

In 2014, the Goiás edition, presented by Thaís Freitas, became the twelfth fully regional edition, without the broadcast of the national edition.

In 2015, after six years hosting the São Paulo edition, Tiago Leifert leaves the program to focus on entertainment. As a result, Ivan Moré, previously on Esporte Espetacular, takes over as host, and there is a change in the local Rio de Janeiro edition, with Fernanda Gentil taking over from Alex Escobar, who moves to Esporte Espetacular.

On March 7, 2016, the program debuted a new visual and graphic package, which included a new visual identity, new opening and closing bumpers, and new on-screen graphics.

On August 29th, the return of Alex Escobar to the Rio de Janeiro edition of GE was announced, replacing Fernanda Gentil, who is going to the Esporte Espetacular.

On June 3, 2019, Felipe Andreoli debuted on GE SP, replacing Ivan Moré, who left the network. Lucas Gutierrez replaced Felipe Andreoli on Esporte Espetacular.

On August 25, 2019, the program debuted a new set in the editions of RJ, SP, DF, and PE following the same style as the set that had premiered on August 5 of the same year on Globo Minas

In March 2020, Victor Andrade left the local edition of Goiás to go to Globo Nordeste. Karla Izumi took over as a temporary replacement.

From March 17th to August 1st, 2020, the program was suspended due to adjustments in the programming, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the sports news was incorporated into the afternoon edition of Praça TV, with Globo's sports reporters participating in the local news programs.

On July 13, InterTV Cabugi, a Globo affiliate in Rio Grande do Norte, ended local production of GE and fired the team, including presenter Thiago César. The state will now broadcast the program generated by the network.

On April 6, 2023, it was announced that GE will have its own local editions in the interior of São Paulo, generated by EPTV, starting on the 17th, thus no longer airing the statewide sports program. The editions will be hosted by Bruna Ficagna (EPTV Campinas), Geraldo Neto (EPTV Ribeirão) and Pedro Guilherme (EPTV Central)

Presenters[edit]

The only states that do not have the program's version are: Espírito Santo (TV Gazeta Vitória), Tocantins (TV Anhanguera Palmas), and Rio Grande do Norte (InterTV Cabugi), where the local stations broadcast the full edition of Rio de Janeiro.
