Do Ustaad (Hindi: दो उस्ताद) is a 1959 Indian drama film directed by Tara Harish and written by Om Dogra and Ehtram Husain starring an ensemble cast. This was the first movie to have two brothers being separated and re-joined by fate. A plot which has been used extensively by many other movies.[4]

This film has absolutely everything that a typical Bollywood movie can have. Its genre hovers around action, crime, drama and thriller. Do Ustaad includes brothers separated in childhood, growing up to become criminals, a fabulous romantic plot, mistaken identities, a bit of comedy and a bunch of superb songs composed by the master of melody O.P. Nayyar. The movie portrays Raj Kapoor in a totally different way. He still pierces with his intense gaze but altogether so frothy and light hearted. You can catch him romancing with Madhubala, who is a walking talking vision.

Plot[edit]

Do Ustaad focuses on how two rival career-criminal brothers recollect their lives in a courtroom in which one is about to be convicted for murder.

The film begins with a court scene where criminal Jagganath (Sheikh Mukhtar) is being prosecuted. With no lawyer to defend him, the judge asks him if he has anything to say on his behalf. He refuses to answer, but his younger brother Rajan (Raj Kapoor) asks him to say something to avoid breaking the vow which he had taken. Jagganath then starts narrating the story and the film goes into flash back. Jagganath and Rajan are two brothers who have lost their parents and work with a Seth to earn a decent living. One day the Seth finds an excuse and fires them. To make the ends meet, the younger brother decides to go against his idealistic elder brother and becomes a thief. Few days later a guy offers them a payment in lieu of robbing something from the railway go-down. Unfortunately Rajan gets caught by the police during the robbery, thus separating the two brothers. Rajan too eventually ends up entering the big bad world of crime.

After this Jaggan is shown to be a seasoned criminal who has made a huge fortune from robbing different places and also leads a team of robbers to help him. He gets married and starts living a dual life where his wife is completely unaware of his actual profession. Jagganath ends up stealing a 12 lakh worth necklace and is on the run from police. At the same time Rajan is released from jail and offers to help the police to track down the thief who stole the valuable necklace. After so many years, the two brothers meet for the first time when Rajan tries to pick the pocket of Jagannath after coming out of jail through the two of them are oblivious to each other’s identity. Later on Rajan tries to woo a girl named Madhu (Madhubala) by impersonating as Raj Kapoor for a while. Madhu runs away from home as her wicked uncle wanted her to get married quickly to get hold of all her property. She eventually lands up at a place where Rajan and Jagganath stay. Both the brothers then try to get hold of her, as her uncle had announced a big reward for her return. Rajan captures her and delivers to Jagganath for claiming the reward. Madhu manages to flee from Jagganath's den(hideout), to end up at his home where his wife has no clue about his true identity. Madhu then cooks up a plan to lead his wife to the den where she and her husband have a face off. After his wife learns about the truth, she leaves him and attempts to commit suicide. She is saved by Rajan, who has a change of heart and decides to live a decent life as a motor mechanic. Jagganath's wife who was earlier pregnant delivers a baby boy, which was later mistaken by Madhu as Rajan's kid. She decides to leave Rajan and concentrate on her career to a become a famous dancer.

One day Madhu's uncle sees her and tries chasing her. During this chase Madhu's car hits Raja(son of Jagganath), who is then hospitalized at a near by hospital. When Rajan reaches the hospital to take Raja home, he meets Madhu and misunderstandings get sorted out. Meanwhile Jagganath has organized a party in honor of a reputed person, who is actually Rajan in disguise. The police arrive at the party and arrest Jagganath, Rajan and Ramlal Sharma (Madhu's uncle). All of them are released except Jagganath who gets imprisoned. Out of desperation to meet his son, he escapes from prison and gets shot by police in the process. Being injured he manages to land up at Rajan's place, who treats him and spend some quality time together to develop a bond which was long lost from all these years. Ramlal appears at his place and gets injured in the scuffle between Jagganath and him. The police soon appear and chase Jagganath to a tall building with Raja still in his possesion. Finally Rajan reveals that Raja is actually Jagganath's son to persude him to climb down from the building, but in vain. He climbs down only after he sees his wife and then surrenders himself to the police. He makes Rajan promise to never tell Raja his father's name.

Then one comes to the present scene in the court where Jagannath is convicted in court and before he goes to jail. Rajan asks Raja to call Jagannath, "Baba" (father) once as he has been told that Jagannath is yet to find his son. Jaganath goes to jail and the film ends.
