TramWave is the name given by by Ansaldo STS to its solution for tram lines that want to do without the Catenary system, that is the ugly wire that hangs over the vehicles. This solution is derived from an earlier design called STREAM which was in revenue service in the city of Trieste (North of Italy) at the beginning of the '00. The differences between TramWave and Stream are small except that the first is applied to Trams while the latter was applied to all-electric buses. The functioning mechanism is simple in principle. The TramWave wayside contact line used to move and recharge tramway vehicles has been designed and implemented for being positioned at the level of the tramway seat running plane, within a normally accessible environment. The charging of the contact line takes place along a short length (approximately 50-100 cm) of the line, subjected to the collector itself and in any case “covered” by the vehicle gauge, and will be “conditioned” by the physical presence of the collection device on the line itself. The current collection device and the respective lifting pantograph (positioned in the motor-driven bogies) make it possible to achieve correct alignment of the on-board collection system with the tramway line axis. Moreover, the contact line features are such that they are able to power tramway vehicles, even coupled ones, transiting at a very high frequency.
