According to the Dictionary of the family names in Belgium and Northern France of Debrabandere and De Baets, Clevers may have originated from "Kleber" and the origin of this family name is:[2]
- variant of the German Klaiber = mason;
- Germanized form of glute = trembling, a nickname;
