Cyclone Shelters in South Asia[edit]

The governments of Bangladesh and India maintain cyclone shelters in communities along the coast of the Bay of Bengal, which experiences frequent and destructive tropical cyclones, to allow threatened residents to shelter in place in their areas rather than evacuating inland. The shelters generally serve multiple purposes, operating as schools, community centres, and other uses when not in use as shelters.

Bangladesh[edit]

Low-lying Bangladesh operates the most extensive network of cyclone shelters in the region, around 2,500 in total as of 2018.^[1]
