The 2023–24 Philippines Football League, also known as The Philippines Football League brought to you by Qatar Airways for sponsorship reasons, is the sixth season of the Philippines Football League (PFL), the professional football league of the Philippines. This is the third season of the PFL under the sponsorship of Qatar Airways, which renewed their deal with Liga Futbol Inc., the league's operating arm. The season started on September 2, 2022, and concluded in June 2, 2024, marking the second time during the Philippines Football League era that a season takes place over two years rather than just one. The league is contested by ten teams, the most ever in a PFL season, which saw each team play each other thrice during the duration of the season. Each team will play 27 matches in total, the most since the 2017 season.
The season was preceded by the 2023 Copa Paulino Alcantara, which saw an expanded field of 20 teams compete from June to July 2023, including teams from the UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) and former PFL and UFL clubs participate, including several who would later confirm their participation in this season. United City renamed to United Clark, and after winning the court case that saw their withdrawal midway through the previous season, skipped the Copa but were allowed to take part in the league season. The Copa title went to Dynamic Herb Cebu who triumphed 2–1 over Kaya–Iloilo in the final, while newcomer Loyola Pasig went on to finish third overall. The league went on a two-month summer break which saw the transfer window and the introduction of several clubs to the league.
The 2023–24 season, much like the season before, saw teams play home and away, although several teams who couldn't make trips would play in proxy venues. The foreigner rule from last season was preserved, allowing teams to play up to 5 foreign players of any nationality plus one of AFC nationality, while allowing up to 5 foreign players in the starting 11 at a time. For the first time since 2017, matches were played in all three major island groups of the country, from Tarlac to Davao del Norte. The season saw the introduction of a new club as well as the return of two former PFL clubs. Cagayan de Oro Rapids, after pulling out last-minute during last season's preparations due to licensing requirements, confirmed their participation in July 2023 after the conclusion of the Copa, based in the city of Cagayan de Oro. Loyola Pasig, formerly known as Meralco Manila in the 2017 PFL, confirmed their participation in June, while Davao Aguilas, who were known as "Davao Aguilas UMAK" during the cup, also confirmed their return to the league for the first time since 2018, relocating to their old home in Tagum. Both Dynamic Herb Cebu and Kaya–Iloilo, playing in AFC competitions, would play their AFC Cup and AFC Champions League matches in Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Teams
[edit]All 7 clubs from the previous PFL season are set to compete, with United Clark competing for the first time since their forced withdrawal from the season. Loyola Pasig and Davao Aguilas will be returning for the first time since 2017 and 2018, respectively, while the only new club for this season is Cagayan de Oro Rapids. Two more clubs, Dasmariñas F.C. and Manila Digger F.C., who had competed during the Copa, were reported to join but couldn't due to their inability to comply with league requirements on time.
The 2023–24 saw teams spread out across the country, with United Clark based in Tarlac, Loyola Pasig and Maharlika Manila based in Metro Manila, Stallion Laguna, Mendiola 1991, and the Azkals Development Team based in southern Luzon, Dynamic Herb Cebu and Kaya–Iloilo based in Visayas, and Cagayan de Oro Rapids and Davao Aguilas based in Mindanao.
Stadiums and locations
[edit]Several of the teams have nominated venues as temporary home venues due to their home stadiums being under construction. United Clark are still temporarily based in the New Clark City Athletics Stadium while changing their name, while Mendiola 1991 is temporarily holding their home matches in the City of Imus Grandstand and Track Oval. United Clark plan to hold their future home matches in their "field of dreams" in Pampanga while Mendiola 1991 will build their stadium in Taytay, Rizal. Due to the unavailability of the PhilSports Football and Athletics Stadium, Loyola would have Rizal Memorial as their temporary home stadium.
In February 2022, the McKinley Hill Stadium in Taguig was approved by the PFL as Maharlika Manila's home stadium, which remained so for the 2023–24 season.[2] Kaya–Iloilo and Dynamic Herb Cebu would play their AFC matches in the FIFA-approved Rizal Memorial Stadium, with Stallion Laguna playing theirs in the Biñan Football Stadium. Cagayan de Oro Rapids would play their matches in the new Pelaéz Sports Complex, while Davao would play in the Davao del Norte Sports Complex. Two proxy venues were approved in case of unavailability in the University of Makati Stadium in Makati and the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa, Batangas.
The following are proxy home venues as approved by Liga Futbol, Inc.[3]

Personnel and kits
[edit]As part of the criteria imposed by the sponsorship of Qatar Airways, each team's kit should contain the Qatar Airways logo where the manufacturer's logo would usually be.[4] The official logo of the PFL should also be placed on one of the sleeves of the kit.

Coaching changes
[edit]Foreign players
[edit]A maximum of six foreigners are allowed per club, with five players of any nationality and a sixth coming from an AFC member nation. This is in line with the upcoming AFC regulations that allow for more foreigners to be signed by clubs. However, only 4 foreign players can be registered in the starting 11 during a matchday, with one of them being from an AFC member nation. A further two foreign substitutes may be placed on the bench.[7]

Players name in bold indicates the player was registered during the mid-season transfer window. The window lasted from 1 January 2024 to 26 March 2024, with the initial deadline for registered squads set on February 20.[8]
