Well, the talk page controversies get people excited about Wikipedia. Would you rather that they not be excited? A controversy-less wiki would be boring. Maybe the controversy actually brings more people to Wikipedia.

The Fermat?s little theorem for x = 2, obtained by another way

J. I. Casaubon Universidad de Belgrano y CONICET Villanueva 1324 1426 Buenos Aires

Argentina [email protected]

ABSTRACT

The Fermat?s little theorem is proved for a particular case (x = 2) using the fixed points of a 1D-map of the Nonlinear Science.

We want to prove:

p prime, p / (2^p-2)

Let the ?tent? map:

Xn+1 = 1 ? 2 /Xn/ n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... /a/=ABS a

Xn in the interval [-1,1].

The fixed points are -1 and 1/3.

For the p-iterated map, with p prime, there are 2^p fixed points which are solution of:

X = 1 +- 2 +- 4 +- ... +- 2^pX where +- is + or -

But two of these fixed points are ?1 and 1/3. The others are not fixed points of the m-iterated map, 1< m < p, and mk = p, because p is prime.

So, we have (2^p ? 2) fixed points, for disjoin orbits of period p.

Then (2^p ? 2)/p is a natural number, (the number of orbits of period p)

So:

p /(2^p ? 2)

QED

Take this into account: numerical calculations must fail for great p due to round-off of the calculator machine or the computer.

Um, don't know. Why did the chicken cross the road?

To get to the other side. (feel free to replace this "classic" punchline with a funnier one)
