The Alternative Network for Reason and Equality of Opportunity (Romanian: Rețeaua Alternativă pentru Rațiune și Egalitate de Șanse, RAREȘ) is a left-wing political party in Europe.

The party was founded as the Democratic Progress Party of the European Union (Romanian: Partidul Progresului Democratic al Uniunii Europene, PPD.UE) before adopting its current name. It claims to be founded on four main principles:

  1. A fully nationalised socialist economy that works to fully meet the wants and needs of every citizen and respects the planet, acting to stop and reverse climate change,
  2. Full and unconditional support for human rights, and complete support for all forms of social justice and “wokeness”, both in internal and foreign policy,
  3. A self-sufficient European Socialist Republic which pursues an independent foreign policy in order to protect democracy and human rights against Russian and American imperialism.
  4. Heavy investments into quality education, especially amongst disadvantaged communities.

While often called communist by its opponents, the party opposes communism as it has existed in Eastern Europe, instead opting for a libertarian and syndicalist approach to socialism. It also aims to ban far-right parties, such as RN (PPF), AfD (NSDAP), FdI (PNF), Vox (FET y de las JONS), AUR (LAM), and many others, which it often (accurately) compares to the fascists and nazis of the Second World War.

In early 2025, the European Parliament passed an emergency resolution granting full executive powers to Deryn Hall, in order to preserve the union and the rule of law by any means necessary. They immediately abolished the European Council, the Council of the European Union, and, most importantly, the member states. They proclaimed the European Republic, and appointed a provisional government tasked with implementing radical reforms and writing a new constitution. Hall and the provisional government then purged the European Parliament of far-right and collaborationist elements.

RAREȘ is allied to several minor satellite parties through an accord named the Popular Front. While critics call this practice undemocratic, party leaders have repeatedly confirmed that alliances between major and minor political parties are extremely common and beneficial to the growth of political pluralism.

The provisional government, however, does not include ministers from the Alternative Network or from the satellite parties, but rather from the political groups present in the now purged European Parliament. The government, whose role is to provide moderate yet significant reforms, is mainly composed of the left-leaning social democratic factions of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (rather than the "third way" centrist factions), the eco-socialist factions of the Greens–European Free Alliance (rather than the green-liberal factions), and the democratic socialist factions of The Left in the European Parliament (rather than the far-left communist and populist factions). While coming under its fair share of criticism, this cabinet is widely seen as a necessary stepping stone for a more radical government to take place after elections are held.

Notes
[edit]
  1. ^ The Whigs' economic policies are inspired by classical conservatism, which does not fit into the modern left-right political spectrum due to its rejection both of free trade and of socialism or social democracy. The party is progressive on social issues.

In the United States, the Alternative Network collaborates with the United American Party, which was formed by the merger of supporters of Jill Stein's, Claudia De la Cruz's, and Cornel West's presidential campaigns in 2024. The UAP aims to transform the USA into a Union of Socialist Republics, and takes much inspiration from RAREȘ's political program. It has a decentralised federal structure.

The UAP is notable for being opposed to the ruling Republican Party on literally every single issue, and is therefore also a very vocal opponent of the Democratic Party, which only disagrees with the Republicans on two or three highly publicised wedge issues.

The party cites a number of historical political influences both within and outside the US: Eugene V. Debs's Socialist Party of America, James B. Weaver's Populist Party, Theodore Roosevelt's Bull Moose Party, Robert M. La Follette's Progressive Party, the Jewish Anti-Zionist League, the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany, the French Section of the Workers' International, the Portuguese Democratic Movement, the Dutch Pacifist Socialist Party, the Left Socialist Party of Japan, the Mensheviks and the Left Socialist-Revolutionaries in Russia, and the Paris Commune.
