Upbeat (rapper)



Upbeat is an American rapper, songwriter, dancer, and singer. He is one half of teen rap duo West Coast Boyz, along with fellow rapper TG-Wrl. The duo is releasing their independant debut mixtape Westside Corruption in February of 2014.


Biography[edit]

Early Life and Musical Beginnings:


Rocky William Harry VanDergriff was born on January 14, 2000, in Modesto, California. He is of Native American, Italian, Dutch, Irish, German, and Scottish descent. He started singing at the age of 6, and rapping at age 7. At age 10, he joined his church worship team as a backup singer.


The Officials[edit]

In 2011, Rocky met best friend and future musical partner, Zak Barry. After learning Zak was a talented rapper, Rocky talk to him about doing music together. Zak agreed, and they formed rap duo The Officials. Zak took on the alias Direction, and Rocky created his Upbeat stagename. Together they recorded the mixtapes Freestyle and Mistakes. The duo almost got a record deal with Las Vegas Records, but didn't get their demo done in time due to family problems for Zak.


West Coast Boyz[edit]

In early 2013, Rocky came up with the name West Coast Boyz for him and his cousin's dance crew. Rocky eventually proposed to use the name as the new band name of The Officials. Zak loved it, and the group reformed using the new name. Rocky then enlisted his cousin, Jeremiah Mercado (aka Lil J). Unfortunately, J had a falling out with the group before getting a chance to record with them. West Coast Boyz eventually finished recording their debut mixtape Westside Corruption, which they are releasing in February 2014.


Personal Life[edit]

Rocky is a devout Christian, and has been his whole life. He got baptized at age 6. He loves fashion, and is planning to start his own fashion brand.
