Secure UserPlane for Location (SUPL) is a protocol based on TCP/IP to transfer assistance and positioning data, thereby helping to locate terminals (also called "mobile stations" or "handsets"). It connects a SUPL-enabled terminal (SET) to a SUPL Location Platform (SLP). Communication is secured by means of SSL.

A SUPL dialog can be initiated by the SUPL-enabled terminal (which is called "SET-initiated SUPL") or by the SUPL Location Platform (called "network-initiated SUPL" or "NI-SUPL").

As already mentioned earlier the transport protocol is TCP-based apart from the NI-SUPL case where the SUPL-INIT message is conveyed via a MT-SMS or a WAP push message (which are both not encrypted!).

Assisted GPS to receive information of GPS satellites quickly via IP instead of slowly receiving (50 b/s) over GPS satellite signaling.
