Born in San Diego, CA, but raised in Culiacan, Sinaloa Mexico, Roberto has become a well known singer within the Regional Mexican genre. In August 2012, Roberto made his first #1 Billboard as the Top Latin Albums’. The thirty-four year old has struggled to reach success, however, recently its been shown to be paying off. Tapia makes up one third of the judge trio on La Voz Kids (The Voice Kids) a popular children's talent show on the Telemundo Network

Early life

Hailing from Sinaloa, Tapia’s parents migrated to the United States before his birth. Tapia was born in San Diego, California but soon after, due to unknown reasons, his family decided to re-establish themselves in Mexico. Tapia spent a good amount of his youth in Culiacan, in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico; where after showing musical inclination, applied and was accepted to the prestigious Difocur School of music in Culiacan, now known as the Istituto Sinaloense de Cultura (ISIC), at the age of 9 years old. In Difocur, Tapia specialized in clarinet, but through his interest in music, expanded his expertise to guitar and percussions. During this time, Tapia gained public playing experience by performing with acts such as the Symphony of Sinaloa. Playing experiences, like these with the symphony, no doubt aided his transition as a public figure later on in his career.

At the age of 13, the Tapia family migrated back to the United States. Reluctant to perform publically early on, Tapia was later convinced to perform for local events such as dance halls and receptions at the beckoning of family and friends. Before being signed to a professional label, Tapia would go door to door at record shops in an attempt to sell his recordings on his own. At the age of 17, Tapia made his professional debut performance in Tijuana, Mexico alongside fellow Sinaloense artist, El Lobito de Sinaloa. Tapia was signed to the record company, Sony International and began putting together his first, self-titled, album; blending his regional Norteña music with hints of electronica and hip hop.

In 2011, Roberto Tapia made an appearance at the Plaza Mexico in Lynwood, CA to celebrate Mexico’s Independence.

In Honor of his hometown, Roberto agreed to perform at El Palanque Culiacan to celebrate La Feria Ganadera de Culiacan which is an annual traditional festival in which everyone shares music, culture and food but more importantly, the Mexican Revolution. The regional Mexican singer, has performed in various venues and events; his success has not come overnight.

Current Works

Roberto Tapia’s charisma and talent have allowed him to transcend to larger projects. Tapia is currently a judge in the television singing competition La Voz Kids (The Voice Kids) currently airing on Telemundo. He describes La Voz Kids as one of the most important projects in his career. Tapia decided to accept the show offer to share his experiences and struggles as a young kid attempting to make it in the music industry with other children. He must create a team of eighteen through the blind auditions. Tapia will compete with Paulina Rubio and Prince Royce to have a winning member that will earn $50,000. Roberto is still looking for three more members for his team to complete a team of eighteen. His current team members are Miguel,Alan, Jeidimar, Edgar, Ariana, Wendy, Brian, Gabriela, Christopher, Emily, Valentina, Christian, Madalyn, Eric and Johanna.

Released Date: March 18, 2002 This was Tapia’s first professional album, released under Sony International Records. Roberto attempted to mix his style of music with touches of Hip Hop and Electronica.

Released Date: January 29, 2008 Though Machete Music is known as a label that focuses mostly on Reggaeton and Latin Pop, it is not hard to see why they chose to produce Tapias second album Los Amigos del M. Seeing the quality and reach of his music, you can see that it was an attempt on their part to reach a new audience and for Tapia, it was a way of working with composers that would take his traditional style of music and inserting a new spin; adding notes of autotune in his music.

2009- El Nino De la Tuna (Fonovisa)

Released Date: May 26, 2009 In his first record with Fonovisa, a more traditional Mexican music label, Tapia does not deviate from his blending of traditional Mexican music with contemporary notes. In this album, one is also able to see a touch of mournfulness with the use of the horns in songs such as “Como Me Enganaste" and "Caminos Diferentes”. He also experiments with upbeat dance music such as “La Tambora” where the song has been compared to merengue. El Nino de la Tuna is a ballad of Chapo Guzman’s life story. This single was Tapia’s breakthrough in his career in which it was his first hit single most heard and played in the streets of Mexico.

Released Date: September 7, 2010 For his fourth album, second with Fonovisa, Tapia flips seemlessly between music styles, staying true to each while adding contemporary touches within them. Tapia is able to flow between Norteno, Banda and Narcocorido genres within this album.

Roberto Tapia recorded his first live album during his sold out concert at the Los Angeles Nokia Theatre . He included thirteen songs and thirteen videos most requested. This album was awarded the Regional Mexican Album and Top Latin Albums in 2011.

2012- El Muchacho (Fonovisa Records)

Released Date: July 24, 2012 Roberto Tapia’s most recent album “El Muchacho” reached first place in the “Hot Latin Albums” and “Regional Mexican Sales” from the Billboard charts. El Muchacho owned four titles such as Top Latin Albums, Regional Mexican Albums, The Billboard 200, Top Latin Albums. Inspired by his heartbreaks, Tapia devoted his time and energy to develop and express his love life experiences in his album. Yet, he also includes some narcocorridos and wrote them in such way to not offend third parties. This album reserves banda for the romantic rancheras and norteno for the narcocorridos. Los Premios de la Radio (The Radio Awards) nominated Roberto Tapia as Artist of the year, male artist of the year and the best song with banda ‘Mirando al Cielo’ in 2012 after his recording his latest album.
