NETRONiX[edit]

NETRONiX (pronounced net-tron-ics) is a unique student society[1] unlike any other, in Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI), granted authority & held accountable, by the administration of GIKI, to maintain the IT infrastructure and services of GIKI's Residential Network (ResNet), in collaboration with the IT Department of GIKI. NETRONiX is a body with complete internal sovereignty. NETRONiX is also host to three annual events, Über.gameX (ÜgX), Shut-up n Play (SnP) (also known as Shut-up n Win) and Annual Networking Convention (ANC) (formerly known as hAcTRiX), and numerous workshops on Linux, networking and python in GIKI.

GIKI's ResNet consists of over 3400 nodes. The network also consists of Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Direct Connect (DC), IPTV, Network Time Protocol (NTP), Email, dedicated computer gaming servers, and various other information resources and services for use of the general population of GIKI. The network is connected on an optical fiber backbone and is provided connectivity with Pakistan Education and Research Network (PERN2) and the Internet.

History[edit]

GIKI had almost no or minimal computer networking capabilities since it's inception till the late 90s. During this period, in order to play DOOM, a video game, in multiplayer mode, batch 4-8 (class of 1998-2002) students living in Hostel 2 started connecting their personal computers on Coaxial Cables to form a network. This network rapidly grew while more rooms in Hostel 2 and some from hostel 1 were added to the network. A group of students from batch 8, who were the unofficial technical authority on the network decided to form a student society to maintain this network and gaming servers through planned expansions. This society became NETRONiX.

NETRONiX's name was coined by it's first Residential Network Administrator and founding member Waqas Rasheed of batch 7. The name "NETRONiX" is blended from the words "network", "electronics" and "VegaViX" (The online alias of Waqas Rasheed).

Structure[edit]

The organizational structure of NETRONiX has undergone many changes over time. These changes can occur so frequently that sometimes multiple changes within a year can happen for 3-4 consecutive years. Throughout the history of NETRONiX the "Residential Network Administrator" (famously known in GIKI as simply "The ResNet") has been the most significant center of power and chief executive for NETRONiX. The office of the Residential Network Administrator has, with time, become a prestigious legacy that is strongly competed for by students in GIKI.

Modern NETRONiX hierarchy has two power centers that work in cooperation with each other. The Offices of the President and the Resident Network Administrator are the foremost authority in NETRONiX.
