Phil ‘Martini’ Martin (born 30 May 1974) is a British freelance musician, currently Drumming for rock bands Joe Elliott’s Down 'n' Outz, Wayward Sons and  alternative rockers Spear Of Destiny. He is renowned for his articulate, groovy, yet solid feel, and has graced many of the World’s great stages & studios. One of Phil’s earlier groups Tokyo Dragons helped pave the way forwards, following their recording and touring adventures.

Joe Elliott’s Down 'n' Outz

During Phil’s tenure with The Quireboys, Joe Elliott - lead singer of UK giants Def Leppard got in touch with the band with the plan of getting a like-minded band together to perform with the legendary Mott the Hoople at their 40th anniversary shows, due at Hammersmith Apollo in September 2009. Down 'n' Outz were formed.

The final of 5 shows at the legendary venue went so well that Elliott decided to record the songs (Mott, British Lions, Ian Hunter) swiftly for an LP release.

The My ReGeneration LP spawned a cover mount with Classic Rock magazine, a UK Tour as special guests to Paul Rodgers in April 2011.

The band continued to record and perform when possible. Two further LPs – including 2019’s This Is How We Roll – written by Joe Elliott himself.

Spear Of Destiny

Phil joined Spear of Destiny in 2015 following a performance in front of  mainman Kirk Brandon at London’s Jazz Café. Phil was performing the music of Free – Kirk Brandon’s favourite group and was suitably impressed.  Phil quickly learned much of the band’s lengthy repertoire (13 LPs at that moment) in time for a regular touring schedule.

The band subsequently recorded 2 new albums during Phil’s time with the band.  2018’s Tontine and 2022’s Ghost Population. The latter receiving particularly strong reviews.

Some re-imagined versions of classic Spear Of Destiny LPs have also been recorded and released with Phil on the Drums. 2022 saw the band play some UK festivals, including the new R-Fest stage, at the Rebellion Festival, Blackpool.

Wayward Sons

Phil was invited to join Toby Jepson’s new band in 2016 – following a contract offer with label Frontiers Records.  Toby Jepson had previously seen Phil play at the HighVoltage Festival in London’s Victoria Park, performing with Joe Elliott’s Down N Outz, to help seal the invitation.

Following the band's first live performances, their debut LP, Ghosts Of Yet To Come, was released in September 2017.  Recorded and co-mixed by Jepson and Chris D'Adda at Vale Studios, Worcs. Among the tours and live shows performed during 2017 and 2018 the band played in support of UFO and Saxon.

The band's second album, The Truth Ain't What It Used To Be, was released in 2019, also recorded at Vale Studios. Tours followed supporting U.S. legends Living Colour, later Black Star Riders in the UK and Germany, and a full Steel Panther European Tour. In 2021, Wayward Sons delivered their 3rd LP, Even Up the Score. Gaining a reputation as a regular festival attraction, the band also opened the main stage at the 2022 Download Festival.
