The Fort Lauderdale–Tampa Bay rivalry refers to the ongoing rivalry between soccer franchises based in either the Tampa Bay or Miami–Fort Lauderdale metro areas. The rivalry initially dates back to the original Fort Lauderdale Strikers and the original Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League,[4] and presently refers to the new Fort Lauderdale Strikers and FC Tampa Bay, whom both play in the recent 2010 version of the NASL.[1][5] Additionally, the rivalry includes the late 80s/early 90s when the two sides played in the third version of the American Soccer League.[6]

The rivalry between the two cities dates back nearly 35 years, and has involved former MLS clubs, Tampa Bay Mutiny and Miami Fusion as well. The rivalry in MLS was short-lived, as in 2001 both clubs were contracted due to ownership issues. The rivalry was reincarinated in the mid to late 2000s when USL awarded franchises to the Tampa and Fort Lauderdale areas.[7]

In recent times, the rivalry between both fans and the media has been dubbed the Florida Derby, referencing the two club's locations in South Florida.[1]

Supporters[edit]

The heart of the rivalry between the two sides exists primarily within the two clubs' supporters groups. Presently, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers are supported by the Miami Ultras, whom also supported the Miami Fusion F.C..[8]

FC Tampa Bay is supported by Ralph's Mob, an independent supporters association, founded in 2009. The group formed alluding to the old Rowdies' mascot, "Ralph".[9]
