Novo Cinema Português (Portuguese: New Portuguese Cinema) is a Portuguese art film movement that emerged in the early 1960's, at the height of Estado Novo, breaking the previous cinematic ideology and filmmaking traditions of totalitarian Portugal.
It is sometimes mistaken with Brazilian Cinema Novo movement.
Origins
[edit]Inspired by the French New Wave and Italian neorealism, New Portuguese Cinema was headed by young, intellectually-minded filmmakers, most of whom were university students overtly seduced by the kind of cinema they were used to see in cine-clubs.
Most of these filmmakers incorporated the first film cooperative, funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation: Centro Português de Cinema. Respected by the regime, the Foundation ended up being a kind of stronghold for New Portuguese Cinema filmmakers.
Involving both fiction and documentary, extending until 1970's, New Portuguese Cinema was one of the most innovative moments in the history of Portuguese cinema, similar to the circumstances that led Brazilian filmmakers and their inception of Cinema Novo.
