Background and opening[edit]

Planning for the construction of Fale Pasifika in the mid-1990s.[1] The building was designed by Ivan Mercep,[2] who had previously designed the first fale (Samoan house) built outside of Samoa.[3] Fale Pasifika was constructed adjacent to Tāne-nui-ā-rangi, the wharenui of Waipapa Marae, the marae and focal point for Māori at the University of Auckland.[3]
