I'm not sure if you want to revisit your withdrawn vote. Since the initial nomination, a fair sized opposition has developed, not just your initial vote. Moreover, I think the discussion itself (chiefly ScottyBoy900Q's statements in response to unfavorable votes) is suggestive of temperamental qualification. Re. your post on Ryan Norton's talk page

It saddens me that you think you'll never be an admin. I consider you a great and dedicated editor. Your high standards for who should be an admin should not be a reason for people to get back to you, if they mean to be serious about wanting the best for WP, for your ideas should be respected. I always admire those who have the courage to stand for their principles, and if you were to go for a RfA, I'd surely support you. I wouldn't care inthe least that you opposed mine, because I know that what you did, you did in good faith and according to your concience. All I can say to you, is, keep up the good work. Life... But How To Live It?

The information is factual and somewhat hard to come by, so I feel that it is still relevant. I have all their CD and LP covers lying here beside me and will scan and put them in the article by tomorrow. Instead of arguing about details, let's be constructive; I (and many with me) feel that this band definitely has a place in Norwegian music history, what do I have to add to the article to make it comply to Wikipedias rules?

Hi Private Butcher. I read your comments and understand your concerns. Sfoskett is an understated long-time contributor who I believe would make excellent use of his administrative permissions if and when he receives them. Granted, he is not an agressive vandal fighter, but there is no disputing that he is a level-headed person who would make good use of the additional tools if they were available to him, which is why I took the initiative to nominate him in the first place. As of late, we have been granting sysop permissions to a number of vandal fighters, but I believe that anti-vandalism need not be the only focus of such a position, making Sfoskett a diverse and worthwhile editor to bring into the fold. Hear hear! No one is perfect, and from your present contributions we see that you are a valuable asset to the project. Let me use a cheesy analogy:

Wikipedia is like a centipede; it can only function smoothly when all the legs (users) are working. If one leg gets busted, it affects the entire project. You probably were a broken leg, but you have now healed, and have helped Wikipedia function.

I think you're being a bit melodramatic. You are taking the opposition votes way to hard. You're RfA is far from one of the worst ones. Check out User:GordonWatts's which had to be taken down early. Yet, he still comes around every so often. If you hang around a few more months, I'd bet that you would get promoted. You can still be the guy everyone talks to for help, even without admin rights. I removed your RfA because your user page said that you were gone and who knows when you'd be back. That sounded like you were going and would have no need for adminship. I'd say that's well within policy. I'd like to add that I didn't realize that the concerns expressed on your user page referred to other things other than concerns over your RfA (remember that from my perspective you left a comment on my talk page and then promptly left citing some critiques I made. ...the chorus of people telling you not to leave. One RfA is not a reason to jump ship. Look at User:Journalist (who commented above). A wonderful editor who got voted down, gamely hung around doing good work, and is now an admin. Honestly, you're getting oppose votes, but so it goes. Acknowledge it, read-up on areas where people feel you don't have the knowledge, keep contributing, and come back. It's not a prize, being an admin. It's not I get 2000 or 20000 or 200000 and you have to give it me. People look at your edits and judge accordingly. Think about how you could improve your editing and come back with an RfA in two or three months. But don't just opt-out. It isn't good for you or for Wikipedia. Marskell 23:11, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Please don't go!

I realise that I'm not the first (and, most likely, wont be the last) that begs you not to leave the project! I realise I opposed your RfA, but look, it was in no way personal!! Look above, people is begging you not to leave. My RfA also failed miserably (I got 2 support votes!!), and I just felt awful and I was considering leaving wikipedia for good. As it happens, I came back after three weeks, and now here I am. From what you wrote on your userpage, I can't imagine what you went through, and I'm awed that you have become the great user you have. Wikipedia needs more of those kind of people. How about a nice game of chess when you get back? I find that nothing helps more when you are down on wikipedia, than a nice, cordial clash of wooden figurines? However, if you want to take time off, and edit only part time, I'm sure all will work out well: After all, editing Wikipedia is an unpaid job, even though it is sometimes quite fun and entertaining. Quentin, the Bible hints that the world is not worthy of you

I know lots has been said about Private Butcher, welcoming him to stay, but, hey, look what I found -that relates (I think) directly to YOU). Since I know you trust the Holy Bible, here is a passage from Hebrews 11:2-3,8,36-38 (King James Version, which is in the Public Domain)

• 1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
• 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.
• 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
• 36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
• 37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
• 38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:)...

My point? I'm saying that I think you are a sincere individual who is sometimes persecuted for being different, and that, since you are quite often right and do not deserve the treatment given to you, that the world is not worthy of your good hearted nature. Now, I'm not saying you are perfect and that all those who voted against you were totally wrong. (Certainly that had a few good points, such as asking you to get a little more experience. Also, while I am firmly convinced that they were wrong on some points, I do not think that all of it was due to meanness or ill will. In other words, I don't think that people intentionally do evil. Lastly, even when they do, we have to hang in there and turn the other cheek and forgive them.

I'll just give you one example:

A preacher were I went to church preacher would not, one time I needed it, be a reference for me when n newspaper reporter said she was thinking of doing a story about how a federal agency had persecuted me for their own greedy ends: They had put numerous people on disability who weren't disabled simply to make a 40-hour pay week -oblivious to the fact that this was bankrupting Social Security, but I was honest and didn't want a disabled check.

Well, I had a "falling out" and left that church -and began going (instead) to a primarily Black church next to my father's auto parts shop. (I'm mostly White, some American Indian, but they accepted me.) Then, I went off to college, and lost contact with the pastor for about ten years! Well, last Saturday, she came back to her old church and just missed me when we were having a fish fry, and left her number. We chatted on the phone over old times, and I planned to visit her and her husband in the next few days. However, before I got around to going and visiting her, I felt led to visit the other church I had visited to make up with my former enemies. This other church (primarily White and Caucasian) is nowhere near where Pastor Mary lives, and I certainly did not expect to see her there. No one knew I was even going to the White Assembly of God church until the last minute, and no one told Pastor Mary that I was going. Well, Quentin, when I got there, there was a Black woman in the back of the church, but I did not recognize her as anyone I knew, and she did not speak to me. I sat down a few seats in front of her. Then, when some of the people in the Assembly of God church recognized me, they addressed me by name, and spoke: "Gordon, welcome back..." Then, the Black woman behind me spoke and said "Is that you, Gordon?" It was Pastor Mary, whom I had not seen in about TEN YEARS! She had never been to that church but was invited by a woman who did photo frames. I had not been to that church since I left on bad terms about ten years previously. Neither of us knew that other was coming, and this church is between Lakeland and Plant City, really nowhere near where either of us live -but about halfway in between.

My point?

When those lazy church elders at that Assembly of God church were AFRAID to even be a "good reference" to me, I left in a huff! I thought of that as a dark time in my life -abandoned and mistreated, but had they not mistreated me, I would possibly never have started going to the little Black church at which Pastor Mary preached -and then I would not have had this incredibly uncommon coincidence happen.

I have recently been seeking God for direction as I attempt to change careers (from legal advocate for Terri Schiavo to biomedical, for which I was trained in college.)

Do you know how many churches there are in Lakeland and Plant City? Hundreds. Maybe THOUSANDS. (Add to that the fact I don't really go to church often, but I went to the fish fry ay my church and visited my old church -just sort of on the "spur of the moment. Pastor Mary is retired and only occasionally goes to churches like this. The chance that I would talk to her on the phone and plan a visit after like ten years and then run into her days later -is the chance of me going to that church once in a decade times the chance of her going once in a lifetime -both on the same night. It was not a coincidence.

My conclusion?

What looked like me being mistreated (and I was) actually helped push me into a different church, get to know Pastor Mary, and then have this miracle happen. (So, what looks like people being mistreated in RfA's may actually be a miracle waiting to happen.)

This is not the first time it happened: In (the Bible's) Genesis 37 ( Chapter thirty-seven), we find Joseph being sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, but this act (which almost killed him, lol) was what allowed him to be in the right place to become the vice president of Egypt -and be in a position to save his family during a very bad famine: The vice presidents in ancient Egypt were not like American VP's: They had "life or death" power, due to the different type of government they had.

So, as I concluded above, I really do hate to be mistreated, but sometimes God allows us to be tested so that we will get tougher, and have a blessing waiting at the end for us.--GordonWatts 02:04, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
