Ryan Staake

[edit]

Ryan Staake is an American director born June 8 1984. He was raised in St. Louis on MTV, Macintoshes and MYST. Originally trained in graphic and user interface design, he works across multiple mediums, including video, interactive, virtual reality, print or whatever excites his imagination. Ryan is known for conceptually-interesting, technologically-driven videos and interactive experiences. Staake's work explores bold concepts, technologically-innovative production methods and non-traditional viewing experiences.

His latest music video ‘Wyclef Jean’ only features Young Thug for a few seconds, after the $100k shoot was derailed by Thug arriving late, then refusing to get out of his car because his “Instagram account was hacked.” Instead of abandoning the project after Thug failed to show up, co-director Ryan Staake completed a snarky cut that shows how the video fell apart and breaks down the rise and fall of the clip's creation. Recordings of Thug detailing his ideas for the video are played over the top of the track, accompanied by text that further explains how the shoot turned into an expensive catastrophe for label 300 Entertainment. An altercation between Thug’s camp and the LAPD even occured during shooting so Pomp&Clout opted instead to use B-roll footage for the final video.

In past years, Ryan worked as a Human Interface Designer at Apple in Cupertino, CA, contributing to the design of the iPhone, iPad and MacOS X on a team now run by Jonathan Ive. After leaving Apple to found his own design and video practice Pomp&Clout , He works with forward-thinking artists like Major Lazer, alt-J, Route 94, Diplo, A-Trak, Caribou, Yelle, Nicolas Jaar and brands such as Balenciaga, McIntosh, Scion, Duolingo and Visa. As of late, his explorations into Virtual Reality have seen a merging of his foundation of user interface and product design with his career as a filmmaker. Staake is currently based in Brooklyn, NY, where he’s privileged to work on an ever-evolving range of projects with his talented team at Pomp&Clout.

With a broad spectrum of award-winning projects ranging from music videos and tour visuals to motion graphics and pixel-perfect interface design, Pomp&Clout is uniquely positioned to create for independent music labels and corporate mammoths alike.
