The Philippines Film Awards of 2020 is a list of award-giving bodies for Filipino movies and their set of winners and nominees, honoring films that were mostly released in 2019.

Award-Giving Bodies

[edit]

1st Village Pipol Choice Awards

[edit]

Presented by the website Village Pipol, the 1st VP Choice Awards honored brands and individuals in 3 categories: Travel, Lifestyle and Entertainment.[1] The list of nominees, with 3 awards for Film (under the Entertainment category) was released December 3, 2019* in their social media platforms[2] and the winners were announced in a ceremony held at Casino Filipino (Manila) on January 23, 2020.[3]

  • Note: With the nominees' list release date, it was noted that the list included a film exhibited in late 2018 (specifically Kung Paano Siya Nawala).

4th GEMS Hiyas ng Sining Awards

[edit]

The Guild of Educators, Mentors and Students (GEMS), an academe-based organization founded in 2016, presents an annual recognition for the arts, grouped in 5 categories: Film, Television, Radio, Theater and Print.[4] They announced their nominees for the 4th Hiyas ng Sining Awards in their social media page on December 26, 2019.[5] The winners were announced on January 7, 2020 through their social media platforms and were presented with their trophies in an awarding ceremony on February 13, 2020 at the Laguna BelAir Science School (Sta. Rosa City).[6]

The Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation Inc started recognizing Filipino film personalities that do well in the box-office in 1971 (later including award categories for Television and Music), but more film-specific recognition were included when they formally rebranded as the Box-Office Entertainment Awards in 2006.[7] Their 2020* honorees were announced on February 7, 2020, with the awarding ceremonies originally scheduled for March 15 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater (Pasay City),[8] but was postponed as part of the global response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • Note: Although this year's ceremonies is declared as the 51st, it is in reality only the 50th occurrence of the event, having skipped the ordinal number 39 in 2009 for the cinema year 2008 recognition (advancing by one and opting that year as the 40th instead).[9]

1st Paragon Critics Choice Awards

[edit]

Toman Entertainment, through its social media platforms carrying the handle Film Lokal Review, has been rating and making critiques of Filipino films after it was established in 2015 and, thus, this year announced the 1st Paragon Critics Choice Awards. The nominees were gradually published starting February 10, 2020[10] and the winners likewise individually posted on March 12–18, 2020.[11] No awarding ceremonies was announced.

2nd Laguna Excellence Awards

[edit]

3Stars Productions started the Laguna Excellence Awards in 2019, recognizing individuals and brands in the fields of Film, Television, Radio, Music, Print, Public Service, and other Lifestyle categories.[15] The 2020 winners, including the awardees for the 4 Film categories, were announced February 1, 2020 on their social media page, with the awarding scheduled for April 5 at CMC Calamba Tent (Calamba City), but was postponed as part of the global response to the Covid-19 pandemic.[16]

30th YCC Film Desk Annual Citations

[edit]

The Young Critics Circle Film Desk, founded in 1990, announced the nominees for its 30th Annual Citations on May 13, 2020 and winners were declared May 16. The recognition ceremonies, in view of the Covid-19 situation, was announced for 2021, to coincide with the citations for 2020 films.[17][18]

1st Gawad Pelikula Filipinas

[edit]

An undisclosed new organization announced in the 1st week of April a set of nominees for its 1st Gawad Pelikula Filipinas, with the awarding ceremonies set for August, 2020, to coincide with the Philippine screenings of the 17th We Care Film Festival, an international film festival based in New Delhi, India.[19]

18th Gawad Tanglaw

[edit]

The academe-based group Tagapuring mga Akademik ng Aninong Gumagalaw announced the list of winners for film for the 18th Gawad Tanglaw, which began in 2003, on June 16, 2020 with the awarding rites set for September 20, 2020.[20]

22nd Gawad Pasado

[edit]

The Pampelikulang Samahan ng mg Dalubguro, an organization from the academes, began giving recogition to entertainment stalwarts in 1998. For their 22nd year, they announced their nominees on March 11, 2020,[21] with the awards night initially set for May 16, 2020, but was rescheduled to October 10 because of the Covid-19 situation.[22]
