Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

Gerald Randolph Opsima Anderson, Jr. was born on March 7, 1989 at Subic Naval Base in Zambales, Philippines. His father, Gerald Randy Anderson, Sr., nicknamed Randy a retired American military officer. He was then in the admiral staff for the U.S. Navy and instructor in the Philippine Navy. His mother, Evangeline Opsima, nicknamed, Vangie, a Filipina businesswoman from General Santos City, Philippines. His parents got married in a Honolulu Court in April 1986 when Randy got stationed in Hawaii and soon after he got stationed again at the Naval Base in Olongapo where Gerald was born. He has one younger brother Kenneth and two older sisters from his mother's first marriage.

When he was three years old, the decision to close U.S. military bases (the Subic base was officially turned over to the Philippine government in November 1992) left his father, then still a member of the U.S. Navy, with no choice but to migrate to the United States. He and his family moved from Olongapo to San Antonio, Texas, USA. In 1995, after Randy retired from the U.S. Navy, the family decided to move to Kansas City, Missouri then to Springfield, Missouri where Randy had a new job as the IT director of Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium. Then finally, at 14 years of age, Gerald and his family moved back to General Santos City.

Education[edit]

He finished his elementary studies in Spring Creek Academy in Texas, USA and his high school degree in Holy Trinity College in General Santos City, Philippines. Anderson is multilingual, demonstrating oral fluency in both English and Tagalog through his work; he also has some proficiency in Cebuano.[2][3]

Acting career[edit]

2006-07: Pinoy Big Brother: Teens[edit]

He was discovered by Joross Gamboa while the latter was performing in his hometown. Anderson was 14 then and was living with his mother and younger brother in General Santos City. One afternoon, on the way home with his buddies, they chanced upon a show featuring Gamboa and screen partner Roxanne Guinoo. They came down from the tricycle and made their way backstage, Gamboa introduced the young Anderson to his manager then, Jun Reyes. "You might have a chance" Anderson remembers Reyes telling him that he might have a chance to become a celebirty because of his good looks and charisma. Gamboa invited the 14-year-old Anderson to join the dance group that performs with the Star Circle Quest alum in performances around the country. Never mind that he didn't know how to dance, and one dance routine took him one week to perfect. And soon after Anderson was convincing his mother to let him go to Manila. Gamboa's manager, Jun Reyes, who then brought him to ABS-CBN Network to join the first season of the Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition.

Even when he auditioned for the first PBB: Teen Edition, which to many young wannabes is a sure way to enter show biz big time, he won the producers over not by showing talent or a determination to please. Laurenti Dyogi, ABS-CBN Business Unit Head and Director of the reality show says

What was really good about him , whenever he reacts, it's very animated, spontaneous, big reaction, jolly. I mean, there's a lot of good looking guys out there, even them they tried to auditioned here. But if you don't have a personality, it's hard. Especially for a reality program. You need to have spunk and personality to be remarkable in a reality program.

On June 3, 2006 at the Aliw Theater inside the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Pasay City, out 12 housemates and after 42 days of staying inside the PBB House, the "Am-Boy Hottie of Gensan" was crowned as the Third Big Placer garnering 19.4% or 293,371 votes of the final votes cast and received a cash prize of 100,000 pesos, a college scholarship and a trip to a local destination.[4]

Since he emerged as the Third Big Placer of the very first Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition finale in 2006, Anderson didn't change the boy's outlook towards the new world he found himself in. He was introduced to his now-adoring fan base, "Kimerald" (combined names of Kim and Gerald) love team with the Teen Big Winner of the the reality show, Kim Chiu. A world of opportunities opened up to the Fil-Am Hearthrob. After winning, Anderson, together with on-screen partner, Chiu, appeared together in several product endorsements, TV commercials, mall shows, guestings and has been a regular artist and actor in ABS-CBN Network shows like the sunday musical variesty show, ASAP (2006–present), weekly anthology series, Your Song (2006-2007; 2010), Love Spell, Aalog-Alog (2006-2007) and in their debut film, First Day High.

In January 2007, the Kimerald tandem topbilled their first lead roles in the Primetime TV soap Sana Maulit Muli, it was considered as one of the most watched television shows in the Philippines for 2007 and its finale reached an impressive 40.6% in the Nationwide ratings (NUTAM).[5] In August 2007, Anderson and Chiu marked their first anniversary in show business by topbilling their first starring film titled, I've Fallen for You under Star Cinema. The movie was also the director, Lino Cayetano's diretcorial debut on the big screen.

Also this year, he and Chiu were awarded by the 37th Guillermo Mendoza Box Office Entertainment Awards as the "Most Popular Love Team" of the year 2007 and the young Anderson was also awarded as "Most Admired Male TV Personality" by the Anak TV Seal Award. His love team with Chiu was regarded as the one of the most famous and successful love team in Philippine Television and Cinema.

2008-09: My Girl, Tayong Dalawa[edit]

May 2008, The year began with another huge project from his home network ABS-CBN, Anderson and his ka-loveteam, Chiu, the hottest tandem brought heat again in the first ever adaptation of Koreanovela on Philippine Television, the hit South Korean TV series, My Girl with Alex Gonzaga and fellow Star Magic artist Enchong Dee. Anderson plays the role of Julian Abueva, a rich, well-educated and serious heir to a very big corporation. Because of some unexpected incident, he was forced to ask Jasmine (played by Chiu) to pretend to be his long-lost cousin so that his grandfather's last wish can be fulfilled. The show premiered on May 26 on ABS-CBN'’s Primetime Bida and ended on 5 September 2008. It became the number one show of the network and ranked no. 4 in AGB Nielsen Philippines in Mega Manila. A month after the successful soap, the tandem teams up again with the tailend of the youth-oriented series Your Song Presents: My Only Hope again with Gonzaga, Dee and other young upstarts. He has also released the soundtracks of his TV Series like Sana Maulit Muli, My Girl and My Only Hope — all of which he topbilled with Chiu.[6]

In year 2009, he topbills his third lead role in his first Action-Drama series titled Tayong Dalawa, co-starred with Jake Cuenca and his long time leading lady Kim Chiu, surrounding him with one of the the industry's most respected and multi-awarded artists like Coco Martin, Ms. Helen Gamboa, Ms. Cherry Pie Picache and a lot more.[7][8] The two lead actors, Anderson and Cuenca went through some of the rigorous trainings of the cadets at the Philippine Military Academy. Their haircut were even done by the PMA Cadets themselves and according to the Military Academy who facilitated the scenes, the said TV Series shoot was the biggest and the most difficult shooting held so far on the premises.[9] The show counts among the highest-rating shows that ABS-CBN has had in recent years. The drama was a phenomenal ratings success and has become a big hit in Indonesia and Singapore.[10][11] The show also garnered a number of awards for him, including two best actor nods and special recognitions, earned him rare reviews from television critics. The action-drama series ended with a huge bang, recording a phenomenal 45.8% topping all primetime series in the national ratings released by TNS and its highest rating since it started.[12][13]

The rest of the year would see the actor mining his "Action Drama Prince" tag into a more action-oriented project in his first leading role via Agimat: Ang Mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla: Tiagong Akyat along with Jolo Revilla as Pepeng Agimat, and his Tayong Dalawa co-stars Jake Cuenca as Elias Paniki and Coco Martin as Tonyong Bayawak respectively. It is a TV series chronicling four of former Senator Ramon Revilla Sr.’s unforgettable characters on the big screen. Anderson plays the modern version of Tiagong Akyat for the first installment of the Agimat series.[14] In an interview, he said the he underwent extensive parkour training to effectively give life to the bandit who steals from the rich to give to the poor. The original ‘Agimat' holders, the Revilla family, are very much impressed with the way ABS-CBN and Anderson executed the TV remake. The son of the original "Tiagong Akyat" and the heir of Ramon Revilla Sr.'s legacy, Senator Ramon Revilla Jr. has nothing but good words for Anderson's portrayal.[15][16]

Cosmo Bash's "Most Wanted Criminal"[edit]

In September 2009, he landed the cover of Cosmopolitan Magazine's Hottest Bachelors Issue, which the year before was graced by actor Dingdong Dantes. The Cosmopolitan Bachelor Bash 2009 was held at the NBC Tent in Bonifacio Global City. This year’s theme was “Cosmo Cell Block 69” where the centerfold hunks (including Anderson) together with the 69 bachelors dressed up like half-naked inmates who have just broken free from their cells.[17] The 20-year-old Anderson was the last to walk the ramp and was introduced by the host as The Most Wanted Criminal. Wearing a striped prison jumpsuit like the other celebrity centerfolds, he pulled this down to reveal his upper body and got the loudest cheers and applause from the audience. When he reached the end of the ramp, he threw his dogtag to one lucky girl in the audience.[18][19]

Anderson said in an interview with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) the day after the event that he was overwhelmed by the response of the crowd during his ramp at the Cosmopolitan's Bachelor Bash 2009. He said,

Typhoon Ondoy Hero[edit]

Just before the month ended came an unexpected honor. A day after the Typhoon Ondoy (international name, Ketsana) floods caused major devastation in many areas in especially in Manila, photographs of Anderson swimming in the murky waters of their village in Vista Real Classica in Quezon City, where the water level had reached as high as the tops of houses' gates.[21] His neighbor, Dr. Divine Rosales-Murao, reported that the actor had made sure she and her three little kids were safe, and even proceeded to check on other families in nearby streets.[22] She later posted photos on Facebook to prove Gerald and his friends heroism.[23][24]

In an article written by Christine Bersola-Babao at The Philippine Star, she quoted

His heroism gained praises and recognition from people and even his home network. Anderson also gained admiration from fans who were inspired and touched with his bravery.[26] In January 2010, the People Asia Magazine handed out a special award to Anderson as a modern-day hero who surfaced during storm Ondoy.[27][28]

2010-11: 2 Teleseryes, 4 movies[edit]

With the phenomenal success of Tayong Dalawa, the Kapamilya network finally thought the time was right to put the pairs drawing powers to the test. Star Cinema's opening salvo for the new decad was his comeback movie with Chiu in the youth romantic-comedy film, Paano Na Kaya in January 2010, the movie hit a box-office mother lode, with the film production's booking and in distribution department claiming it earned approximately Php 10 Million on its opening day. In the same month, Chiu and Anderson starred in anoher soap again titled, Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo — ABS-CBN's first big teleserye which was aired in January 18, together with marquee names like Gabby Concepcion, Albert Martinez, Coco Martin and Kris Aquino. In early September, Anderson started talking about another movie that he and chiu were going to be doing for Star Cinema, that movie turned out to be Till My Heartaches End, which was shown on October 27. It was also the last starring film of the "Kimerald" tandem.

The year 2011 opened with a brand new start, Anderson worked with the Popstar Princess Sarah Geronimo for the very first time in the Romantic-Comedy film titled Catch Me, I'm In Loveunder the direction of Mae Cruz-Alviar. Anderson plays the role of Erick Rodriguez III, the spolied and arrogant son of the President of the Republic of the Philippines which was protrayed by Mr.Christopher de Leon. In order to teach Erick a lesson because of his "not so good" behaviors, the President sent him on a trip to Isabela to immerse himself in the life of a rural community, with Roan (Geronimo) as his supervisor. The two initially don't get along, but they fell in love soon enough and that's where the conflicts begun.[29] According to Philippine Box Office Index of Box Office Mojo the film earned 15.95 million on its opening day and as of May 11, after almost a month of showing (31 days of screenings), the film had a total gross of Php 120.88 million. This was the debut team-up of Anderson and Geronimo in the big screen.

September 2011, Star Cinema with the collaboration of Viva Films, didn't wasted more time and teamed-up Anderson and Geronimo again on the big screen for their second Rom-Com Film titled Won't Last A Day Without You directed by Raz Dela Torre, which was shown on November 30, 2011. It received a “General Patronage” rating from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, and was ”Graded B” by the Cinema Evaluation Board. The movie earned P20 Million pesos on its opening day.

In October 2011, the Action-Drama Prince topbilled the award-winning and ABS-CBN’s first advocacy series, Budoy where he protrays a man who is suffering from Angelman syndrome. As he returns on primetime, he was joined by promising young stars of his generation, Jessy Mendiola and Enrique Gil, the advocacy serye marks the return of Janice de Belen to the Kapamilya network where she plays as Budoy's adoptive mother and guardian. His performance as a mentally challenge man bagged multiple awards and nominations for him. Some of the award giving bodies were Gawad Tanglaw, Northwest Samar State University Students' Choice Awards, KBP Golden Dove Awards, ASAP Pop Viewers' Choice Awards, Golden Screen TV Awards, PMPC Star Awards for Television and a lot more. His advocacy-drama series was even recognized in Seoul International Drama Awards and a finalist in the Drama Category of New York Festival's Television & Films Awards.

This was his first primetime television series without Chiu as his leading lady instead he star alongside with Mendiola, although Chiu herself supports the said drama as well as coincidentally having an adjusment timeslot with her own drama My Binondo Girl. In April 2012, Anderson was hailed as the "Prince of Philippine Movies" by the Guillermo Mendoza Box Office Awards of 2011 for the two movies he was starred with Geronimo.

2012: El Brujo, 24/7 in Love[edit]

Anderson did his first Independent film entitled "El Brujo" co-starred with his good friend and Tayong Dalawa co-star, Jake Cuenca. The 23-year-old Anderson grew his beard and moustache for his character as Miguel in the said action movie directed by Tikoy Aguiluz. Aside from sporting a new look, he also did his own stunts, fulfilling his dream of becoming an action star. The fighting instructor of the indie film was even from Thailand who also faciliated the Thai movie, Ong-Bak. In El Brujo, he said that the audience can expect a fast-paced movie.[30][31]

In November, Star Magic, the talent arm of ABS-CBN and Anderson's talent agency, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a movie offering, 24/7 in Love starring the agency’s brightest talents under Star Cinema. The movie featured seven different love stories that brought together an ensemble of celebrity royalties that will happen only once in a lifetime. One of the pairs that were featured in the movie was the reunion project of former love-team partner, Anderson and Chiu for the Mae Cruz directed episode. The loveteam plays an ex-couple Patty and Alvin, who didn't have a closure when they broke-up. The pair, who last appeared together in the movie Till My Heartaches End in 2010, were both happy to work with each other again. The movie was shown on November 21 in theaters.[32][33][34]

2013: Int'l success of On the Job[edit]

In November 22, 2012, Star Cinema in partnership with Reality Entertainment announces their upcoming action-thriller movie, On the Job that topbills Anderson and Piolo Pascual. Some of the cast includes the award-winning veteran actors Joel Torre, Joey Marquez and a lot more and was directed by, Erik Matti. "OTJ" is a crime thriller film inspired by a real-life scandal in which prison inmates are temporarily released from prison to work as contract killers on behalf of politicians and high ranking military officials.[35] In this film, Anderson plays the role of Daniel Benitez, an inmate who turns into a professional killer, temporarily released from jail to become a contract killer for croocked politicians.[36][37]

"They would take me out (in prison) to kill people. I’m an inmate, at the same time a hitman. I was jailed for killing my illegal recruiter. I idolizes Tatang, which is Joel Torre. He’s my father figure in jail, he became my mentor. Everything Tatang does Daniel does, how he moves, how he acts. Daniel became the protégé until Tatang did something wrong, and Daniel had to take over. Daniel is ambitious, he’s determined, he wants to make something of himself." [38]

In an interview he said that he had to shaved the sides of his head and a portion of his right eyebrow for him to achieve the "bad boy" look.[39] In order to prepare for this challenging role, he shared that he researched a lot. He even watched DVDs to aid him to stay true to his character. [40][41]

In May 2013, the lead stars, Anderson and Pascual announces in the private screening of "On the Job" at the Post Manila that the film will have its world premiere at the 66th Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France. The film was selected to be part of the Directors' Fortnight, “a noncompetitive, independently programmed section that is held parallel” to the main competition of Cannes. OTJ was the third Filipino film that will premiere in the prestigious film festival.[42][43]

After its screening, the movie received a two-minute standing ovation from foriegn viewers and Filipinos as well at the film festival and came out with a rave reviews from critics of international publications.[44]

British critic, Neil Young of The Hollywood Reporter described the film as a "likably rough-edged hitmen-vs.-cops thriller." and was heaping praises on Anderson, he wrote. Resembling a sruffy Pinoy cousin of Jesse Bradford here, the half-American, Texas-raised Anderson shows genuine screen appeal as the loose cannon Daniel, and could be an intriguing addition to a Stateside action franchise such as ‘The Fast & the Furious’,” [45][46]Variety Magazine, considered as the US showbiz bible, gave a rave review for Filipino film. The review was written by the magazine’s senior film critic Justin Chang, "...On the Job is a gritty, convoluted but steadily engrossing crime thriller from Filipino genre maven Erik Matti." He said the interaction between Torre and Anderson as two jailbirds who are allowed out of prison to carry out assassinations provides the film’s most substantial emotional dynamic.” [47][48][49]

On the other hand, Allan Hunter of Screen Daily said that, "Director and co-writer Erik Matti seems more comfortable with staging action sequences and generating noir-like atmosphere than creating nuanced characters or subtle dialogue but the basic story of crime and corruption at the heart of a rotten society is involving enough to forgive any infelicities." Hunter called it "essential viewing on its home territory." PiFan's movie review, "On the Job: Dark, Hellish and Brilliant". [50][51]

In the Philippines, GMA Network the rival network of Anderson and Star Cinema's home network ABS-CBN Corporation said that 'On the Job' is a two-fisted tale of scum and villainy." adding, "the underlying pleasure here lies in seeing mainstream actors performing against type in a story that leaves no character unscathed." [52]

Rotten Tomatoes, a Review Aggregator, reports that 100% of fourteen surveyed critics gave it a positive review; the average rating was 6.7/10. The movie opened in the United States late September, where it received positive reviews from the american daily newspapers, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times and it was even featured in the broadcasting network, CNN.[53]

The much talked about action-thriller co-produced by Star Cinema and Reality Entertainment hit Philippine cinemas on August 28.[54][55] The film was part of the continuing grand celebration of Star Cinema's 20th anniversary.[56][57] In this film also gave Anderson his first Best Actor nomination in the prestigious FAMAS Awards and his first Pinakapasadong Katuwang na Aktor (Best Supporting Actor) award in the 16th Gawad Pasado Awards.[58][59][60][61]

2014-present[edit]

Passion for Basketball[edit]

Anderson starts playing basketball when he was still in States at his Middle School time. He has a passion for basketball. When asked what he would be if he didn't take up acting, Anderson stated that he would be a basketball player. One of the people who helped Anderson on his journey was his high school basketball coach Pol Torrijos. Coach Pol first saw Gerald’s potential when he saw the latter play for the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University team when he was still in high school.

In his first feature film, the movie-based-on-a-Rexona commercial First Day High, Anderson played a basketball varsity star named Michael Jordan “MJ2” Ramirez, in the movie, his brother was played by PBA's Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters player Rich Alvarez.

He kept his love affair with the sport going when his family moved to General Santos City when he was 14. Anderson joined the basketball varsity team of Holy Trinity College, where he was named MVP of an interschool tournament participated by most of the high schools in the SocSarGen area.

In 2011, inspired by his role in Budoy, Anderson organized a charity basketball game event for the benefit of the kids with special needs.

Personal life[edit]

Anderson had three serious girlfriends before he enters at the Pinoy Big Brother House. He broke up with two of his exes because of his qualms about long distance relationships. He remembers the days when girls would come to their house in Gensan to tell his mom that he got them pregnant. Anderson came clean and said he has been sexually active since the age of 16.

But by the time when the soap concluded in early July, report started surfacing that Anderson and Chiu were experiencing "rough times" especially after they returned from the U.S where they had joined the annual Hearthrobs Tour in March–April 2010. Aside from Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby, the tour also featured Bea Alonzo, and when whispered started spreading that he made a move on Bea. On September 5, during the night of Star Magic Ball at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel, he and Alonzo were photographed leaving together, even though his date at the ball was Chiu. According to the source of a local magazine, Anderson had broke up with Alonzo, his rumored girlfriend, in London during the final leg of their Hearthrobs concert tour in Europe. A romance that allegedly started April 2010 in the New York leg of the same tour, a romance that was never admitted to the public.

During the press conference of the movie at the Dolphy Theatre in the ABS-CBN Roadcast Complex, Anderson broke down, leaving even the press stunned. He divulged that he and his mother had been receiving death threats over the possible dissolution of his ka-loveteam with Chiu, with other callers threatening to douse him and Alonzo with Acid. Anderson excuses himself from the press conference, and waslater whisked away to da medic because he was Hyperventilating.
