The Capsules is a DreamPop band from Kansas City, Missouri.

History[edit]

The Capsules were started by husband and wife duo Julie Shields and Jason Shields in early 2000. They met drummer Kevin Trevino at a mutual friend’s wedding and immediately started writing music and playing shows together. As it happens, Kevin was a fan of Julie and Jason’s first band, Shallow, and his laid back attitude fit in with Julie and Jason’s desire for a more simplified approach to being in a band.

In 2001, the band was contacted by Stephen Hillenburg, who was also a fan of Shallow. He had recently started a show called Spongebob Squarepants and thought of Julie and Jason’s style of music as the perfect fit for the Spongebob episode entitled Bossy Boots, which required a “teenage pop song”. The band happily wrote and recorded the theme for Bossy Boots as their first commercial project.

Shortly after, the band started getting label attention, and released their first album Reverser in 2002. During this time, The Capsules continued to tour and write, and soon after released a 7” single on Isota Records.

In 2004, the band released their second album, entitled Someone For Everyone. This album also generated a music video, for the song “Light The Path”. Later that year, The Capsules released the Home EP, a collection of songs including the standouts “The Cycle Starts Again” and “Outside You”, as well a cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Down On Me” from the seminal Darklands album.

The band continued to tour, including shows with bands such as Low, Juliana Hatfield, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, All-American Rejects, Clearlake, David Garza, Sondre Lerche, and The Mountain Goats.

The Capsules third full length, entitled Long Distance Dedication was released in 2009 on Vespera Records, and features their most personal and intimate collection of songs yet. One such song is “Hearts” which was written about the death of a close friend.

According to the band’s website, they are currently in the studio working on their next album.

Shallow[edit]

Prior to starting The Capsules, Julie and Jason Shields formed Shallow, with Jason's lifelong friend Ryan Newton and local drummer Stephen Kretsinger. The band began playing shows and touring the country fresh out of high school. Before long, the band caught the attention of New York City label Zero Hour Records, and was signed in 1995. Shallow released their first album, 3D Stereo Trouble on Zero Hour in 1995. There was a music video for the song "Cool 500".

In 1996, the band recruited famed Spacemen 3 frontman Sonic Boom to remix some tracks from 3D Stereo Trouble. Combined with some addition material, Shallow released The Sonic Boom Remixes, as well as CD Laser Lens Cleaner. That Summer, the band was also asked to join the Lollapalooza tour for a couple of local shows, but the tour’s promoters were so impressed with the band that they were asked to continue on the tour for all remaining shows.

The following year, the band released their second full-length record called High Flyin' Kid Stuff. It was this album that gave the band their highest recognition, including a hit on college music charts called "Missile Command". The album was #1 most added on CMJ and Gavin. The album cover art was created by noted British graphic designer Brian Cannon.

In 1999, Shallow released Jumping Away From Something Exploding on Devil In The Woods Records which included new material and a live version of "Missile Command" which was recorded at the band’s favorite local club, The Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS. The band changed drummers several times over the years and toured with a live Farfisa player from time to time. Additional members of Shallow included Dave Banaka, Jay Willars, Matt Fitzgerald, Dave Gaume, and Damon Eckard. The band was known for their powerful live shows, beautiful albums and a tireless work ethic. Shallow played shows with many notable acts including The Flaming Lips, Luna, Mercury Rev, Garbage, The Creatures and Spectrum. They even toured with The Brian Jonestown Massacre on their infamous “Dig” tour.
