Hidden in the Woods (a.k.a. En las Afueras de la Ciudad, known in the UK, USA and Canada as Hidden in the Woods') is a 2012 Chilean Thriller film,. It is directed by Patricio Valladares and co- written by Andrea Cavaletto and Patricio Valladares , and features a mixed cast of relatively unknown actors and well-known Chilean comedians, including Siboney Lo, Carolina Escobar, Daniel Antivilo, José Hernandez, Domingo Guzman, Daniel Candia, Nicole Perez.
Plot

Inspired by true events, HIDDEN IN THE WOODS tells the story of two sisters who have been raised in isolation, subjected to the torment of their abusive, drug dealing father. When they finally decide to report him to the police, he kills the two officers and is put in jail. But things go from bad to worse when the girls must answer to their Uncle Costello, a psychotic drug kingpin, who shows up looking for his missing merchandise which is hidden in the woods.

Production and Development
[edit]This movie is an expression of the film genre that was famous during the 80s in USA, made with low budget and lots of horror and action scenes that were launched directly to the market of the VHS video. Movies where the censorship is a topic of diffusion and material of marketing. This movie plays with the spectator, trying to shock him with moments of drama, action, black humor and violent horror achieving a hybrid of genres that so much I like. When I was young I watched all the movies that I could find in video clubs, but I was attracted by hundreds of VHS of low budget cinema genre, with an unknown distribution. I lovely remember movies as " I Spit On Your Grave ", " Baby Blood ", "Evil Dead", " Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia " or "Straw Dogs".Talking with the scriptwriter, Andrea Cavaletto, we decided to write a script to make a very violent movie, where we could merge the style and ideas of the new horror cinema(as the cult movie HATCHET), with cult scenes of retro cinema genre from 70s, 80s and 90s. The script gained a subsidy to promote the cinema, thanks to the Chilean government: "Fund To Promote A/V ". This budget helped us to rise much money from private and cultural companies. With this budget I was able to produce the movie.
Also we knew that we had a small budget and I wanted a constant sensation of violence for each one of the actors and their main characters, with a lot of screams and alteration of voices. I wanted all of them hysterical. The scenes of the revenge has passed all the limits for a censorship standard. I believe that when you have a small budget, you need to experiment and mix things, in order that this is the best thing for your movie. We needed to rely on a good representative for the movie, so I went in touch with Adam Mason ( Broken, Blood River, Luster), who very elegantly recommended me to speak with Patrick Ewald, that now is my Sales Agent (Epic Pictures Group). This movie was completely filmed in a small city in the South of Chile, it is the city where I was born and I continue living at the moment. Where we have not professional actors, without professional filling team and technical personnel to make a movie. It is a rural city. We prepared a massive casting, where we have found many persons with the features that we needed. For example, we have found a teacher of Philosophy who is a mixing between Danny Trejo and Charles Bronson. And many secondary characters with "Tex Mex" aesthetics as if they went from a Sam Peckinpah's movie. We hired professional chilean actors for the main roles, who for the most part are employed at Soap operas. Reading the script, they were surprised for the violence of the story, that is not so usual in cinematographic Chilean productions.
The difficult thing was to direct the young girls, since their parents were on the set, and they asked us to be smart with their children, but in one scene, following the script, their characters had to be raped and we had to film one of them having a childbirth. We had only 14 days to film the whole movie, so we had to film each of the locations,passing from a country house in the suburbs of Chillan, to a small mountain village called " Los Lleuques ", then we filmed scenes in a cabin in the woods and in a terminal of buses in Chillan, to end in a beautiful beach in another city, called " Hualpen in Concepcion ". So we needed an order and a time for every scene, accordingly with the budget and actors. I worked without problems thanks to the production and expecially thanks to Francisco Inostroza. [edit]The film premiered on 6 August 2012 at Fantasia Film Festival and was on 23th to 27th August 2012 at the London FrightFest Film Festival. The movie was distributed by Epic Pictures Group.
