From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HERFessions App is an anonymous platform designed to provide support for sexual abuse victims and survivors.[1] The application was curated by Osasu Edobor, a gender advocate, counselor, and mental health first responder.[2]

Background[edit]

During her career in the media, Osasu encountered attitudes that viewed women as objects to be enjoyed rather than as people capable of remarkable achievements. [3]More so, a volunteer program at Makoko in Lagos introduced her to gender advocacy after she ran a shelter for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors. She heard harrowing stories of rape, sexual assault, and partner violence when she worked at the Pastor Bimbo Odukoya Foundation.[4] The foundation provided survivors with shelter and work. Survivors were unable to continue psychosocial counseling after leaving the shelter for personal reasons. To help the victims heal mentally and emotionally, the HERFessions mobile app was developed in response to the stories of the victims.[5] This app meets the need for continued counseling sessions. The online engagement platform minimizes human movement and builds a supportive community.[6]

Description[edit]

Osasu curated HERFessions, a mobile application that utilizes cutting-edge technology and media to help women and girls recover from sexual and gender-based violence.[7] In addition to an online chat room, there is an online counseling center and directory where victims can consult psychologists, lawyers, non-governmental organizations, and law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.[8] [9]Furthermore, the application provides resources for survivors with education and tools to help them heal and thrive.[10] The app also has a feature button to report abuse.[11]
