This article outlines the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic in the Canadian province of Alberta. As of 17 March 2020[update], Alberta reported 97 cases of people testing positive for COVID-19. By March 17, 12,258 tests had been performed.[1]
Timeline[edit]
The first presumptive COVID-19 case in Alberta involved a tourist who had been repatriated to Calgary from the Grand Princess.[2][3] As of March 16, cases have been reported in every Alberta zone.[4]
On March 12, 2020, Alberta announced a ban on all meetings of more than 250 people.[5]
By March 13, 2803 tests have been performed in Alberta.[6] By that time, there were numerous closures and cancellations across the province.[7] including some Alberta Court of Queen's Bench jury trials.[8]
By March 15, Alberta had reported 56 cases, and had completed 10,524 tests.[9][10] Alberta's chief medical officer of health, Deena Hinshaw, announced that Alberta had its first cases of community transmission, which was at that time limited to seven people,[11][12] six of whom attended the Pacific Dental Conference[12] held from March 5 to 7 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.[13]
On March 15, Alberta ordered, until further notice, all daycares to close, all K-12 schools to suspend classes and close to students, and all post-secondary institutions to suspend in-person classes and switch to online classes. Grade 12 diploma exams will still occur.[14]
By March 17, there are 23 new cases representing the "largest day-over-day increase yet in the province" resulting in total of 97 people in Alberta with the virus.[12]
