Andrea Desmond (born February 20, 1988 in Berkeley, California) is an American singer and songwriter.

Biography[edit]

Andrea Desmond is an American pop singer and songwriter best known for her award-winning songs, “Run” and “Inner Fire”. With a fresh mix of top 40, modern pop and electronic, Andrea Desmond hopes to give listeners a taste of her own musical landscape.[1]

Desmond began taking piano lessons at age 5, and she started making her own songs at age 10. Her father set up a home recording studio where Desmond would record instrumental and vocal tracks for her own songs.[citation needed]

Desmond has never been a stranger to music, and it’s a fire that runs in the family. Her cousin, Alan Menken, was one of the formative figures in her early musical development. Menken is best known as an Oscar-winning composer of Disney classics such as Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin.[2]

In High School, Desmond's electronic music composition teacher took note of her musical accomplishments and offered her a private composition mentorship with composer Alan Stein, composer for Anheuser Busch. Desmond worked with Stein for about 2 years. Later, Desmond began attending Emerson College, and later transferred to Chico State University, where she received a Bachelors Degree with Honors in Music, with an emphasis in composition. While attending college, Desmond started her own band and signed on to student record label Wild Oak Records.[citation needed]

2012-2014[edit]

In 2012, Desmond moved to Seattle and formed her own band and continued to develop and improve her own sound and writing style with high class accredited local producer Martin Feveyear. She was nicknamed within the city as ‘Seattle’s Indie Pop Sweetheart’ and started growing her fan base at good speed, and gained much press coverage.[3] It was there that she won the Seattle Jammin' Challenge.[4]

In 2013, Desmond was given a contract with indie label Spectra Records where she was able to create and release her EP Open Spaces. During this time, she was nominated for various awards, regarding her songs and her album, including gaining first place in the Eco Arts Awards: Songs of Freedom Competition. Many compared her to Lily Allen and Adele, recognizing her potential and giving her reviews and compliments.[3] Around this same time, Desmond's song “Run” won the Best Singer award at the Akademia Music awards.[5]

2014-Present[edit]

In 2014, Desmond, looking to take her career one step further, moved to Los Angeles where she performed regularly at the House of Blues and linked up with John ‘Sly’ Wilson of Sly, Slick and Wicked, songwriter for Justin Timberlake, who offered his expert constructive advice. From starting out as a piano and vocal instructor, adding in some songwriting coaching, she then excelled and began to build a musical foundation in the Los Angeles area.[3] Desmond’s single, “Inner Fire,” brought her into her new age of music where her sound began to evolve as a pop and top 40 artist. Since stepping into this new kind of sound, she played her debut show while opening at a Regina Spektor concert with the VIPs of the House of Blues, Anaheim. Word got out about her through prominent players in the music industry, landing her interviews with iHeartRadio and KISS 107.7 FM.[6]

Various newspapers and magazines have written about Desmond's music and praised it for the soulful touch it carries, including NBC News, Skope Entertainment, and ABC News. She has also been a featured artist for different publications, including The Cool Noise, Kurrent Music, Indie Reviews and Industry Reviewz among many others. [7]

Desmond recently signed on to Creative Music Agency for Management and Love Harmony Records. Her music has also been licensed with the Discovery Network (including partners such as the Oprah Winfrey Network and TLC), PBS Series “RoadTrip Nation”, and Magical Elves, which produces “Top Chef”.[1]
