Amerivision Song Contest

The Amerivision Song Contest 1991 was the thirty-sixth edition of the annual Amerivision Song Contest, organised by the American Broadcasting Union (ABU), host broadcaster National Broadcasting Company(NBC). The edition was hosted in the Astroarena, in Houston, United States, as the winning country of the previous edition, Haiti, refused to host the contest due to not having proper funding nor a venue to do so, runner up Barbados also refused to host the contest, making the hosting offer up in the air, Argentina and United States submitted bids to host the contest, and ABU chose the United States to be the host nation.

This edition saw the debut of Aruba, the first former antillean country to participate of the contest, as well as the debut of the relegation system. After 28 nations applied to participate of the contest, ABU implemented the rule that 24 was the maximum number of participating countries, therefore the relegation system was implemented to filter that, where the four worst performing countries of the 1990 contest — Dominican Republic, Panama, Peru and Suriname. — were all cut from this edition, only to return in 1992.
