History[edit]

Johnson Hana was founded by barrister and former frontman of the band Lost in Flight Dan Fox in 2016 with the support of his brother Alex Fox.[7]. In 2017 the company successfully raised €1 million from Enterprise Ireland, Voxpro’s Dan Kiely, one-time chairman of Allegro Brendan Coakley, and former partner at Matheson Stuart Margetson[8]. Other prominent figures in corporate Ireland lent their backing to the business during this time. This included Brian Montague former chief executive of A&L Goodbody, and John O’Donnell, chief technology officer of Hostelworld, Tony Keohane chairman of Ervia and previously chief executive of Tesco Ireland, and former chairman of The Irish Times and one-time chief executive of Irish Life & Permanent David Went [9]. Brian Montague, David Went and John O’Donnell were appointed as advisors of Johnson Hana at this time[10].

In 2019 the firm made multiple strategic hires and continued to grow, with Paul Ryan joining from Goodbody, and Emer Durkan former head of consumer protection at KBC joining the team.[11]. In 2020 Johnson Hana Partnered with Kira Systems who offer artificial intelligence tools for contract review enhancing their ability to review large volumes of contracts[12]. Niamh O'Mara former chief of staff at EY joined as chief operating officer in 2020, and Caroline Goulding, chief data protection officer at TikTok, joined as an advisor[13].

In 2020 Johnson Hana raised €3.5 million through a combination of equity and debt leveraging €3m in equity and €0.5m in debt. Specialist investment fund BVP led the round, with equity participation from existing shareholders Dan and Linda Kiely the founders of Voxpro, John Ryan a partner with PWC Hong Kong, leading UK software entrepreneur Finlay Ross and Tom Hickey former CFO at Tullow Oil & Cartrawler[14]. The debt was provided by Ulster Bank[15]. . The business is also backed by Enterprise Ireland who were an initial seed investor as part of their high potential startup funding programme. Early investors also reinvested[16].

Johnson Hana signed a 5 year framework deal for legal process outsourcing with Ervia and a multiyear framework deal with Coillte in 2020[17].
