Soul Scream

Soul Scream are a Japanese hip hop group formed in 1994. They are regarded as one of the pioneering acts in the Japanese hip hop scene.

History[edit]

Soul Scream were formed in 1994, consisting of rappers HAB I SCREAM, E.G.G.MAN and DJ CELORY. They released their debut album THE "DEEP" in 1996, featuring appearances from other hip hop acts Zeebra, K Dub Shine and Rhymester. The album is widely regarded as an essential album in the Japanese hip hop scene. [1] Their single Hachi to Chou (蜂と蝶), released in 2000 is also viewed as an all time classic song in the genre.[2] They went on to release an EP titled TOu-KYOu in 1997 followed by two more albums, The Positive Gravity: ~案とヒント~ in 1999 and Future is Now in 2002. They then went on an 18 year hiatus while all pursuing solo careers until releasing the single Love, Peace & Happiness in 2020 followed by more singles over the years. [3] These include TOu-KYOu 2021 (2002), a revised version of their 1997 single, again featuring the likes of Zeebra, K Dub Shine and Rhymester, DNA (2022), and Boomerang (2023) featuring pop singer Pushim.

Yuya Mishima (呂布カルマ, Ryoffu Karuma, born January 7, 1983), known professionally as Ryoff Karma, is a Japanese rapper and media personality.

Early life[edit]

Yuya was born in Hyogo prefecture in Japan. He entered the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nagoya University of Arts. He aspired to become a manga artist, and applied for the Newcomer's Award in the manga magazine Weekly Young Jump while he was still in university.[1] During his fourth year in university, he made a demo tape and sent it to rapper Darth Raider. He received advice to do a live show of his own [2]

Career[edit]

Ryoff Karma released his first album, '13 Shit' in 2009, followed by 'Yojigen HIP-HOP' in 2010 and 'Strong' in 2010. Drug use, alcohol and addiction are prominent topics within his albums. [3] He is more widely known as a battle rapper, as he performs in many events a year, having won 24 of them, [4] as well as appearing in various adverts and TV entertainment.[5] He has a personal YouTube channel where he gives commentary of Japanese hip-hop news.[6] He has also had collaborations with the adult toy manufacturer Tenga.

Personal life[edit]

Ryoff Karma gave birth to his first daughter in 2015, and his son in 2020. [7]
