Albert Arnold Bennett, Jr. was born June 29, 1888 in Yokohama, Japan to Albert Arnold Bennett and Mela Barrows Bennett. Albert A. Bennett was a graduate of Brown University and a Baptist missionary. Mr. Bennett also founded the Baptist Theological Seminary of Yokohama in 1884. Albert Arnold Bennett,Jr. was the 4th of seven children.

When Albert Bennett, Jr. was 14, he was sent by merchant ship back to the United States for formal education. He graduated from Hope High School in Providence, RI and was accepted to Brown University, following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps. Bennett was expected to gain a Divinty degree but in his freshman year, a class in logic captured his imagination and mathematics became his passion. Bennett completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Brown and recieved his PhD in Mathematics from Princeton Unviersity.
