Simon "Ghost" Riley[edit]

Simon "Ghost" Riley is a character first introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). He is voiced by Craig Fairbrass in Modern Warfare 2, Jeff Leach in Call of Duty Warzone and Call of Duty: Mobile,[1] and Samuel Roukin in reboot series' Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023).[2] In Modern Warfare 2, he is a member of Task Force 141, serving as its second-in-command. Later in the game, he is assassinated by General Shepherd along with Roach.[3][4] In the reboot series, he remains a member of Task Force 141, albeit with increased dialogue, most of which is him making jokes.[5] He wears a mask over his face with a grinning skull design over it, as well as sunglasses over the mask.[6][4] He is the main character in the Modern Warfare 2: Ghost mini-series of comic books, which explores the backstory of the character prior to the events of Modern Warfare 2, including the death of his parents.[4][7] The character was designed by Joel Emslie in less than two hours in 2007.[8]

Ghost's role in the reboot Modern Warfare II was highly criticized by Jeremy Peel of TechRadar, being described as two-dimensional with no character development, and that the character should have been let go when Modern Warfare III was released. He furthermore described the character as a "balloon with a hole in it", and the reasons for what he viewed as weaknesses in the game's campaign.[5] Ghost has often been considered a fan favorite character,[9] with his likeliness being utilized in internet meme culture as a reaction image.[10] According to Ruby Innes of Kotaku Australia, the character's renewed popularity from Modern Warfare II was especially amongst women on TikTok, leading to the creation of numerous "fan-cams" of the character and social media posts claiming Ghost to be their "babygirl." Innes considered Ghost to be the "TikTok sexyman", derived from the term "Tumblr sexyman".[11]
