Plot

Chanda’s Secrets is about a 16 year old girl named Chanda who lives in South Africa, with her mom; Lilian, her half sister Iris and her half brother Soly. When Chanda’s father and two older brothers died in a mine explosion. It left Chanda and her mother alone. Soon enough Lilian found love in Issac Pheto. Who welcomed Lilian and Chanda with open arms. He and Lilian seemed to be inseperable. Everything seemed even better since they found out Lilian was pregnant with Iris. Issac loved Lilian and Chanda, but when he took his love a step farther then he should have with Chanda, by raping her. He lost his family. Lilian,Chanda, and baby Iris were on the streets until Chanda’s aunt Mrs.Tafa and her husband took them in. Mrs.Tafa isn’t Chanda’s real aunt, but it seems as though she was. She had known Lilian and her husband for years, mainly due to the fact that their husbands worked together. During the time they were staying with Ms.Tafa , Lilian had met another man named Mr.Dube who was slightly older then she was but he obviously had feelings for her, from the start he was very loving towards Chanda Mama and Iris and Mr.Dube and Lilian soon grew together as a couple and she and Chanda moved in with him and had a son named Soly. The death of Mr.Dube effected them all. Until Jonah came and had a baby with Lilllan, whom they named Sara. Jonah was good man however had a big problem with drinking.d Xserve

Characters

• Chanda" is the main character of the book. She is a sixteen-year-old girl growing up in a country in Africa. She is deals with some major, realistic problems throughout the book. One of them includes a disease called AIDS. Read the book to find out more :)

• Lilian is the mother of Chanda, Iris , and Soly, and baby Sara. She had 8 kids altogether. Only 4 of them survived. She had 2 husbands and 2 boyfriends. she had kids by each man. She is from Tiro. A small town in the south of Africa. She left her home in Tiro because of Chanda’s father wanting to marry her, but her parents didn’t approve of him. She was hated by her family because she didn’t marry who they wanted her to. They said she put a curse upon the family.

• Esther is Chanda’s best friend in the story. Her parents died of HIV/AIDS. She was separated from her brothers and sister. She and Chanda have a numerous amount of fights in the book, but they always manage to talk it out. Towards the end of the book Chanda realizes that Esther isn’t who she turns out to be. Esther has not been living with her uncle and aunt she has actually been selling her body for money which was to pay to get her brothers and sister back. She then realizes the consequences that it wasn’t what it was all cracked up to be. When Chanda’s mother dies she moves in with them and Chanda sticks by her when she finds out she has AIDS.

• Jonah is the stepfather of Chanda, father of Sarah, and husband to Lilian. Jonah drinks and cheats on Lilian. When his daughter ( Sarah) died he went to the funeral and he was drunk and everyone could tell but no one said a thing because, everyone knew about Jonah and his problem.Lilian didn’t care, and Chanda wanted to yell at him for not being a responsible man, father, or husband. He wasn’t there to comfort Lilian and that is what set Chanda into fury. For now no one in Chanda’s household likes Jonah because of the things that he has done to hurt his family. No one doesn’t like him for who he is and for what he does. He goes to an abandoned building to drink and sleep with other women. Chanda knows that he does these things and that's why she is disrespectful to Jonah. Lilian thinks that one day he will stop drinking, but Chanda believes that he is all talk. When Sarah ( his daughter) dies he blames Lilian, because he knows she has aids and that she is the reason for Sara’s death and that all the miscarriages had happened because she had HIV/AIDS which killed the babies.

• Mrs. Tafa is known as the towns “know-it-all”. She gossips about other people’s personal lives. She is kind of a caretaker to Lilian’s kids. When Lilian went to visit her family in Tiro Mrs.Tafa stepped in to take care of them. Mrs.Tafa does not like Esther because she thinks that she is a bad influence on Chanda and gets upset at the fact that Chanda allows her to live with her. Toward the end of the book when Chanda tell her that Lilian has AIDS she says that she would not want to leave near a family who has AIDS, but then she has a change of heart and decides to help out. She even decides to pay for Lilian’s funeral.

• Soly also known as Soloman. He is Chanda’s half brother. His father died from a natural death. To Chanda he was the best man in her and her mothers life since her father had died along with her brothers in the mine disaster. Soly is quiet and peaceful most of the time unless he feels there is a time where he should speak up and say something. He is easily persuasive because of his age. Iris tells him something and he automatically believes it because Iris is older then he is. He is close to Iris out of everyone. He never fights with her because she is there for him just as he is for her. Chanda's was adopted and rapped by her mother in a effort to have HIV/AIDS with her best friend Esther Macholo,Polo. Esther polo,cholo was a witch doctor who sat at home always playing video games with Soly, Chanda's deformed grandpa. Ms.Lilian was a force to be feared, judging that she bought all the polo's from Esther macholopolocolo. As a last effort to find her grandma, Sollayies she went to Zimbabwe to look for Mufasa the dinosaur. Mrs.Tafa is the owner of a toffee shop who spends all day each 5 Popsicles in each hand not including her eye balls. I sugguest you keep away from this hairy beast -Ronald Mcdonald once said. You should always give toffee to those in need like Esther's mom who ate all the meat balls one night, causing Esther Macholo polo to freak and stab her in the face with a carving knife.

• Iris Is the talkative, mean, and rude one of the family. She is Chanda’s younger half sister. Her dad was put out by Lilian when she found out he was inappropriately touching Chanda at a young age. His name was Issac Pheto. Iris is really close to Soly and is disobedient to Chanda, because she feels Chanda may be older but she is not her mother. Iris has the “no one can be mean to you but me” attitude towards Soly, she says some mean things to and about him but she does get upset when someone tries to hurt him.

Style

Very unique and a beautiful story.(By: William Weed face) Shows how one small thing can change a life for instance getting stabbed in the face with a carving knife.
