Malaysian Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association (MVFRA)

Malaysian Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association (Abbreviation: MVFRA; Malay: Persatuan Bomba Sukarela, Jalan San Peng) is an active non-profit and non-governmental organization (NGO) search and rescue team in Malaysia. MVFRA is lead by Captain K.Balasupramaniam PPN. PKPB. PJB. F.COM, one of the founder that set up the Association in 1991. MVFRA has responded to most major international SAR and relief operations. MVFRA's operation is run solely by its volunteer members[1][2][3][4]. Volunteer members are trained and divided into three categories: Red Zone Volunteers (skillful members with many years of experience and undergone various multi skill training in search and rescue operation and disaster response operation), Yellow Zone Volunteers (members who provide operation support) and Green Zone Volunteers (members who handle technical maintenance). As a non-profit and non governmental organization, MVFRA works together with corporate entity to run its activities and program.

Objectives

The three (3) objectives of the Association is:-

  1. To educate member of public on Disaster Preparedness and survival skills through various measures.
  2. To provide search and rescue aid locally and internationally during emergency and disaster.
  3. To provide relief operation locally and internationally in times of natural disaster.

Insignia

The white Maltese Cross with blue line signifies the volunteerism spirit and represent the unity and harmony in Malaysia. The white colour represents volunteerism and blue colour represents courage.

Above the Maltese Cross is the acronym of the Association's full name in English. The red colour represents bravery.

Below the Maltese Cross is the word 'Fire & Rescue' which carries the 2 main objectives of the Association, which is fire safety and rescue.

In the middle of the Maltese Cross, the Fireman Hat represents protection of volunteer members during operation; the Fireman Axe represents humanitarian aid and service to the local operation and international operation during disaster.

In the middle of the Maltese Cross behind the Fireman Hat, the 2 horizontal pike poles represent the Association's pride in serving the nation; the 2 sling hooks above the end of pike poles represent the friendship of every members and volunteers and solidarity with each other.

In the middle of the Maltese Cross below the Fireman Hat, the Star of Life represents every protected rescue victim will be given medical assistance immediate on site.

Inventories Description
Rescue Radar II Rescue Radar II is a Ground Penetrating Radar Life Locating System. It uses Ultra Wide Band Ground Penetrating Radar (UWB GPR) to search for possible signs of life through detecting heartbeat or small sign of the victim's breathing. It can detect up to 10 metres depth of debris after an earthquake, land slide, building collapse.
ResQ Palm ResQ Palm is a handheld see through wall human movement detector unit. The ResQ Palm gives fast information regarding estimated distance, speed of movement and indication of direction of human behind concrete wall.
ResQ 17 ResQ 17 is a wide angle camera search system with CO2 sensor. The ResQ 17 is effective for searching people trapped underground or below debris by making comparison of the density of CO2 detection in open space and trapped space.
Edilgrappa Combi Tool Edilgrappa Combi Tool is a battery operated self-contained cutter and combi tools. It is a useful tool for urban rescue and also search and rescue operation.
AFT Backpack AFT Backpack is a portable fire fighting unit. The AFT is designed to significant reduce response time in fire hazards situation and also better accessibility.
Duveet Duveet is a powerful HID light that provides 43 watt power long lasting for 2 hours.

Community Initiatives

MVFRA has initiated various community effort that benefit the community. Among the programmes are The Fire Kids Club Safety Workshop[16][17][18][19][20], Road Rescue Riders Learn to Save Lives in Road Accident, Cycle Safely Programme[21], Fire Hydrant Adoption and Home Safe Home Programmes, Nature Ranger Camps, L2K Leadership & Survival Camp, Flood Survival & Drowning Risk Awareness Campaign[22][23], Family Road Safety Programme. Since incorporation, MVFRA has trained more that 70,000 children on fire safety, survival skill and prevention measures. MVFRA also initiated the Birthday Visit Programme as outreach community programme by visiting birthday parties and teaching kids basic fire safety.

MVFRA build Malaysia Largest Flag using Mineral Water Bottle


MVFRA hold the largest flag made out of mineral water bottles record on March 10,2009 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.[24] The largest flag of 24.4m x 12.2m is made out of empty mineral water bottles stuffed with blue, yellow and red recycled colour paper. The feat was a collaboration with Ue3 Shopping Complex and students from SM Taman Maluri, Kampung Pandan. The aim of the project is to encourage recycling, inculcate volunteering spirit among youth and also patriotism spirit. The largest flag was displayed at Dataran Merdeka during the 42nd National Day celebrations.
