The Castles of Burgundy is a board game for two to four players, set in Medieval Burgundy. It was designed by Stefan Feld and illustrated by Julien Delval and Harald Lieske, and was published in 2011 by Ravensburger/alea.[1] It is considered a classic of the eurogame genre,[2][3] using dice rolling and dice placement, a modular setup, and set collection as its mechanics.[4] The dice and the ability to change them give players a wide range of options.[5]

In 2016, Ravensburger released Castles of Burgundy: The Card Game.[6] Ravensburger also released a "roll-and-write" version, The Castles of Burgundy: The Dice Game, in 2017. [7] In 2019, DIGIDICED developed versions for Steam, Android, and iOS.[8] In 2013, the French gaming website, BoiteAjeux, released a browser adaptation of the game.[9][10]

Expansions

The first expansion (2011) introduced 8 new player boards, numbered 10a - 10h. [11]

The second expansion (2012) added 4 new hexes (Park, Goats, Sequential Order, and Worker Tiles). [12]

The third expansion (2013) introduced a new board, designed for the German Board Game Championship 2013 regional qualifying round. [13]

The fourth expansion (2013) introduced a new board type, Monastery boards, with 8 new designs (maps numbered 13a to 13h). This added a new scoring mechanic. [14]

The fifth expansion (2014) introduced a new building type and corresponding science, "The Pleasure Garden," which allows players to use the white "goods" die as if they had rolled it as an additional die.[15]

The sixth expansion (2015) introduced a new type of hex, the Cloister. [16]

The seventh expansion (2016) introduced one new board, created for the German board game championship 2016 regional qualifying round.[17]

The eighth expansion (2017) introduced Trade Routes, a card addition.[18]

The ninth expansion (2017) introduced team maps, meant for 2 vs 2 player. [19]

The tenth expansion (2018) introduced 1 double-sided board for solo play. [20]

According to the 2019 Ravensburger press release, an eleventh expansion will be released with a new, premium edition in 2019.[21]
