The author has evidently interpolated a generation and runs the descent through the Bendahara family in order to assimilate the Indian line and give Tun Ali's tenure of the office of Bendahara the colour of hereditary entitlement. That Tun Ali was not the son of a Bendahara is implied elsewhere in the Raffles MS and is explicit in the Shellabear edition, which gives:...In contrast to Raffles 18, which is concerned to make Tun Ali a Malay in the male line, the Shellabear edition gives both Tun Ali and Raja...

τ. a Papers on Malay Subjects, Part I-V (2008), pg 50 Who then are the waris? They are the "heirs" of some territorial chieftaincy, or of some ruling house–in Rembau, as in Sungei Ujong, Jelebu and Johol. Doubtless, they sometimes claim descent from mythical figures like the Batin Sa-ribu Jaya, who is alternately a man and woman at the discretion of local genealogists, but the facts of history are plain enough. The exploiters or overlords or rulers–call them what we will–of the ancient Negri Sembilan were the members of the great house of the bendaharas of Malacca and Johor. Tun Perak, the fourth of the Malacca bendaharas, held at one time the actual post of penghulu of Klang. He was the father of the Bendahara Lulok Batu, the seventh bendahara (A.D. 1511), and grandfather of Tun Isap Beragah, the eighth bendahara. Continuing the pedigree we come to Tun Perak's great-grandson, Tun Isap Biajid, the ninth bendahara, who is associated with the early years of Johor; to Tun Isap Misai, a generation later, the tenth bendahara, and lastly to Tun Isap Misai's grandson, the eleventh bendahara, Tun Sri Lanang, who inspired (if he did not write) the Sejarah Melayu.

ـﭻ. a Papers on Malay Subjects, Part I-V (2008), pg 288 The Dato' Sekudai appears in the "Malay Annals" and is a historic as well as a legendary figure. The "Annals" tells us very little about him. His son, Tun Ahmad, married Tun Puteh, daughter of Tun Anum, Bendahara of Johor. Another of his sons, Tun Kembak, married a Johor lady, Tun Chembul, and had two children, Tun Puteh and Tun Pandak. The Dato was a grandfather at the time the "Annals" were written. Of him personally the Sejarah Melayu only says that he obtained his name because he was the first person to colonise Sekudai; clearly, the Rembau and Sungei Ujong traditions cannot refer to an earlier Dato' Sekudai. It only remains to fix his date by the light of what the "Malay Annals" tells us.

ـﭻ. a b c A History of Johore, 1365-1941 (1992), pg 193 When can this chief have had occasion to administer Negri Sembilan? Certainly not before 1614. Tun Sri Lanang was still Bendahara then. Moreover Tun Sri Lanang was succeeded immediately by two of his sons. If the universal tradition in Negri Sembilan that the Bendahara Sekudai bore the title of Sri Maharaja, is correct, then following the system of rotation (JRASMB., 1931, p. 30) it appears that he must have succeeded Tun Jinal, the fifth Bendahara, whose style was Paduka Raja (see above). But can Negri Sembilan tradition be wrong, borrowing the title Sri Maharaja erroneously from the now century-old title of the Rulers of Johor? The Batavian large recension of the " Annals " which corresponds with Dulaurier's Codex A, says it was actually Tun Jinal, Bendahara...; pg 194: Genealogical tree featuring Tun Ahmad, son Tun Muhammad (Seri Lanang), Tun Anum, Tun Jinal and their immediate descendants
