Welcome to your Wikipedia "quiz". For this, you must create a section for the following theme: This Week in History. Below there are decades listed in sections. Each of you must choose one and create a section that describe major events that occurred during this week in history for the decades listed. (February 22-28). In each section you must write in complete sentences with an intro to your decade. Within each section, you must cite all sources you use. You must also link to any Wikipedia article relevant to your section.

1991-2000[edit]

The 90s are home to many exciting events around the world and these are just a few. In 1990 the Hubble Space Telescope was launched Into Space[1]. 1992 was the Official End of the Cold War and the year Riots broke out in Los Angeles After the Rodney King Verdict.[1] Nelson Mandela is elected president of South Africa in 1994.

1981-1990[edit]

Introduction[edit]

The 1980s were the decade where style reigned supreme. It became the generation of status seekers. It also was the generation of some of today's timeless music and musicians. [2] This era was their time to shine, and they did so vibrantly. History was made in music with some well known names in the week of February 22-28. This Week of History gave birth to many legends, and accomplishments in the music industry

February 27th 1981 [edit]

On this date Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder recorded the song Ebony and Ivory. This is a song about racial harmony, using piano keys as a metaphor. The black keys on a piano are ebony, and the white ones are ivory - the song asks why we all can't lie together in perfect harmony like the keys.

February 26th 1983 [edit]

On this date Michael Jackson hit #1 with Thriller. This album was a follow-up to Jackson's critically and commercially successful 1979 album Off the Wall. Thriller explores similar genres to those of Off the Wall , including pop, R&B, rock, post-disco, funk, and adult contemporary music. Thriller enabled Jackson to break down racial barriers in pop music via his appearances on MTV and meeting with President of the United States Ronald Reagan at the White House.

February 28th 1984 [edit]

This was the date of the 26th Grammy Awards. This day Michael Jackson wins 8 Grammys in one night. He won "Best R&B Vocal, Male for 'Billie Jean', Best R&B Song (Songwriter) for 'Billie Jean', Best Rock Vocal, Male for 'Beat It', Producer of the Year (Non-Classical), Best Pop Vocal, Male for 'Thriller, Best Video Album for 'Thriller, Best Recording for Children (Quincy Jones (Producer) & Michael Jackson for 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial', Record of the Year 'Beat It', Album of the Year for 'Thriller' on this day. 1971-1980[edit]

During the years of the 1970's, there were many important events that occured that changed and shaped the the way the future is now.

February 22-28, 1972 - On February 26, A dam broke in West Virginia, and ended in a tragic loss of 107 people.

February 22-28, 1974- The Ethiopian police shot at demonstrators.

February 22-28 1975- On February 23, Amy Alcott won the LPGA Orange BLossom Golf Classic

February 22-28, 1976- On February 24, Leonid Brezhnev opened the 25th Congress of CPSU(Communist Party of the Soviet Union)

February 22-28,1977- On February 25, There was an oil tan that exploded west of Honolulu. It spilled 31 million gallons of oil.

February 22-28, 1978- On February 22, there were two tankers that contained propane gas, that exploded and killed 15 people in Waverly, Tenn.

February 22-28 1979- On February 23, Frank Peterson Jr was named the 1st black general in Marine Corps

February 22-28, 1979- On February 24, the war between North & South Yemen began

February 22-28, 1980 - The year of 1980 was the first time that Egypt & Israel exchanged ambassadors.

1961-1970[edit]

February 22-28,1961 On February 24, 1961, the bodies of three revolutionaries from Hungary were exhumed after they were executed in June of 1958 for treason following the failed 1956 Hungarian revolution. Their bodies were put in unmarked graves in Budapest and the cemetery records regarding their identities were altered.

February 22-28,1962 February 22 of the following year, Pope John XXIII signed Veterum Sapientia, the highest papal decree that made Latin mandatory for Catholic seminary students and prohibited priests from arguing against the use of Latin. February 24, 1962 saw the first use of Echo 1 to transmit telephone and television signals, launched in August of 1960. [4] The 1962 South Vietnamese Independence Palace bombing occurred on February 27th. The bombing was an attempt to assassinate President Ngô Đình Diệm. However, the bomb failed to detonate because it was dropped from too low an altitude to arm itself. On the same day, there was an explosion in Yugoslavia at the Tito Coal Mine. 54 miners were killed of the 177 that were trapped in the mine.

February 22-28, 1963 On February 28, 1963 Juan Boschthe first African-American alderman of Chicago was elected to the Chicago City Council.

1951-1960[edit]

On February 24,1950, a vote was taken by the Regents of the University of California to force all employees of the university to sign a loyalty oath that was against Communism. 31 professors were laid off because of the loyalty oath, and they decided to file a suit and take it to the Supreme Court, where the decision to abolish the oath was made on October 17, 1952.


On February 25,1952, a solar eclipse occurred. The eclipse was a total eclipse, and a total eclipse happens when day is turned into darkness because Earth is blocking all sunlight.

On February 26,1960, an Alitalia airline crashed into a cemetery at Shannon, Ireland killing 34 of the 52 passengers.

1941-1950[edit]

1931-1940[edit]

February 23, 1934, Leopold III of Belgium took the throne as the new king. Leopold III ascended to the throne the day after his father was killed[5] . Albert I of Belgium, Leopold's father was killed in a mountaineering accident.


The Transactions of the New York Surgical Society had a meeting discussing unique medical cases on February 28, 1934. One doctor mentioned that on February 22nd, 1932 a woman went to see him about her enlarged right eye[6]. The woman had multiple surgeries and check-ups with the doctor during February of 1932. On February 28, 1934 the women was tested on her Basal metabolic rate. Basal metabolism is the amount of calories that is required to complete normal functions[7] . Everyone's basal metabolism rate is different. The doctors found interest in this case because the woman didn't show enough symptoms to have hyperthyroidism which is what usually causes inflated eyes and she had a low basal metabolic rate.


On February 25, 1935 Robert Watson-Watt exhibited the first model of what is now called a radar[8] .

1920-1930[edit]

The 1920's were most commonly referred to as the Roaring Twenties music and things such as the Flapper were popular in this decade. This decade was part of the Prohibition Era and Jazz Age. On February 24, 1920 Adolf Hitler walked in a meeting hall for the National Socialist Program where he would be speaking at announcing the programs agenda and was excited to see more than two thousand people in attendance anticipating his speech.[9]

On February 28,1922 Unilateral Declaration of Egyptian Independence was implemented by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and the Ireland Governments.[10]

Several years later in 1925 also on February 28, there was a major earthquake that had a magnitude of 6.2 that struck most of Northeastern North America and caused alot of damage in parts of Canada it was called 1925 Charlevoix–Kamouraska earthquake

The Late Ronald G. Hayes Also known as Ron Hayes an American Television Actor was born on February 26, 1929 and prodominately know around the US for his sharp looks in American Television

On the day of February 22,1902, Doctor Harvey Williams Cushing, The first US brain surgeon performed his first brain Surgery. Harvey William Cushing is often known as the godfather of neurosurgery, as some of his techniques and studies are still to this day used. One of his most famous works is when he discovered Cushing's Disease
