Mimi Griffin (née Senkowski; born 1956 or 1957)

Early life and education

[edit]

Mimi Senkowski lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with five siblings after her 1950s birth.[1] She began playing basketball during the early 1960s.[2] Senkowki was a theatre director while at Lancaster Catholic High School.[1] While participating in athletics, she received an "outstanding player" award in 1972.[3] From 1973 to 1974, she received Most Valuable Player Awards in athletics twice and basketball once.[4][5]

During February 1974, Senkowski was one of "the first two high school girls to score 1,000 points ... in Lancaster County."[6] The following month, she had a knee injury while on Lancaster Catholic's basketball team.[7] Her team also won the Class AAA division held by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association in 1974.[8][9] After leaving Lancaster that year, Senkowski had 1,168 points. She was in the top 15 for most points scored at Lancaster Catholic in girls basketball during the late 2010s.[10]

In the mid-1970s, Senkowski attended an accounting program at the University of Delaware and was on their basketball team.[11] While at Delaware in 1975, she planned to participate at trials for a spot on the United States women's Pan American Games basketball team.[12] By the beginning of 1976, Senkowski left Delaware and continued her basketball experience at the University of Pittsburgh.[13][14] Senkowski and her team played at the 1977 Eastern Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Tournament and were quarter-finalists.[15][16] After accumulating her 624th point during January 1978, she was "the second leading career scorer in Pittsburgh women's basketball history."[17] The following year, she completed additional post-secondary studies at Lehigh University.[18]

Career

[edit]

Basketball

[edit]

During the late 1970s, Senkowski played basketball with the Allentown Crestettes.[19] She also worked with Lehigh as an assistant coach during this time period.[20] In 1980, her Lehigh position ended.[21] That year, Senkowski joined Manufacturers Hanover Trust and remained there until 1982.[22][18] While there, she advertised the Women's Christmas Classic with her project director position.[23][24]

Golf

[edit]

By the early 1980s, Senkowski had worked on the Westchester Classic while working for Manufacturers Hanover.[25]

Awards and honors

[edit]

Griffin was given the Mel Greenberg Media Award by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in 1994.[26] She also received the Naismith Outstanding Contributor to Women’s Basketball Award from the Atlanta Tipoff Club in 2018.[27][28] As part of the Athletic Hall of Honor, Griffin was selected by Lancaster Catholic High School in 2000.[29] She was later inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.[30]
