'Shane Tilton [1]) is an American academic and Visiting Assistant Professor of Electronic Media at the Ohio University Lancaster Campus.[2][3] He is a current director of the Center of Society and Cyberstudies, which is an international thinktank designed to study and observe the impact of the Internet on society as a whole.[4] He has published research and provided media commentary on the topics of the digital divide, new media, and celebrities. He has also published research on the impact the connected society has on government,[5] the definition of the web,[6][7] digital distribution.[8] & social media's connection to the real world.[9]

Education[edit]

Tilton earned a PhD in 2013 at the Ohio University,[10] advised by Mia Consalvo and Eric Rothenbuhler. His dissertation, First Year Students in a Foreign Fabric: A Triangulation Study on Facebook as a Method of Coping/Adjustment, focused on the use of large social networking sites such as Facebook by first year college students. He described the three of the core functions of Facebook as they related to the development of a first year college student were they Facebook acted as a “stream of awareness” for the student, Facebook acted as a point of engagement between the student and the collegiate environment and Facebook represented “real world” community builder.

Celebritism[edit]

He has spoken more than 40 times at a variety of conferences and public forums.[11] The most noted of these presentations was his presentation at SxSW regarding "nanocelebrites,"[12] a group of experts who use multiple communication platforms to deliver niche information and position themselves within the public sphere.[13] Also, he discussed the three major areas that define a celebrity are content, personality, and reach.[14]


Professional Service[edit]

He is the chair of the "Two Year/Small College Interest Division" for the Broadcast Education Association[15] and was the former chair of the "Communication and the Future" for the National Communication Association.
