Jennel Annette Garcia (born June 8, 1994)[1]

Early life[edit]

Jennel hails from Rochester, Massachusetts, where she graduated from New Bedford High School.[1] She has been singing from a young age, first in American Juniors at age 10, and later in a singing troupe that performed at nursing homes.[1] Jennel was once featured on “America’s Most Talented Kids”.[1]

Career[edit]

The X Factor[edit]

Garcia sang "Paris (Ooh La La)" by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals for her audition in Providence, Rhode Island,[2][1] judge L.A. Reid called her a "feisty little fireball",[1] Demi chimed in, gushing that Jennel’s audition was “the most promising act I’ve seen of this competition so far.”[1] She received 4 yeses.[1]

During bootcamp, Garcia's performance was described by L.A. Reid as being "spicy".[1] Garcia sang Sweeter by Gavin DeGraw.[1] She performed I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry for her mentor Demi Lovato and guest mentor Nick Jonas.[1] Lovato selected Garcia to compete in the live shows.[1] She performed "Home Sweet Home" during the first live show on October 31, 2012.[1][3]

During week two, Jennel sang "I Love Rock n' Roll" by Joan Jett from the movie Crossroads. L.A. said "It was a Joan Jett parody," Britney disagreed calling it "hot, hot and hot." Simon felt she wasn't as "fun and charming" as she was in previous performances and that "it was pretty much a straight cover and you are better than this." Demi let him have it, saying, "Accept that she was great.[4] However, before the third live show, she realized she had tonsillitis, which made practicing and performing a challenge for her.

Although she got tons of praise from the judges, Jennel was eliminated from the competition after a sing-off against fellow Young Adult contender, Paige Thomas on November 15, 2012.[1] Britney Spears, L.A. Reid, and Simon Cowell all voted to send her home, while Lovato voted to keep her. She finished in eleventh place.[1] Her elimination was very controversial, causing viewers to send Lovato and the other judges death threats for Lovato's song choice, and the judges deciding to send her home.

Jennel announced on March 31, 2013 that her first single will be called "Walking on Strings". No word yet on when the single will be released. Jennel recently recorded guest vocals on Lyric 145's version of the Maroon 5 hit "One More Night" for their mixtape, The L.O.F.F. Tape.

Artistry[edit]

Garcia cites Pat Benatar, Joan Jett and Lady Gaga as her musical influences.[5] Asked if she felt she got a lot of crap for her image, Jennel held nothing back.[6] “I did. And the first thing I'm doing tomorrow is dying my hair black [laughs]. And I'm taking off the heels because I don't wear heels; I like sneakers; I don't like fancy shirts; I like T-shirts and I don't like brown hair, I like black hair and I am putting yellow in it. After that I'm getting right back into making music and my own music because one thing I really hated was that we were singing music by other people.”[6]
